The sad decline of Owen Jones 09:09 - Nov 20 with 26912 viewsNeedhamChris

I used to agree with a lot of what Owen was about even if his delivery was a bit much.

However, he's effectively now just an arm of the Hamas propaganda unit. A sad, sad decline.

If you have the time Herbie, then this is a very good read from a source I trust implicitly. I've met Marlon a few times after being pointed in his direction by Cotty.

It's a long read but well worth it.

Also highlights the problems with the Twitter individuals and their hyperbole/inaccuracy that you use to frame events.

i still often agree with him, but in many ways he's a symptom of the infantilisation of politics in the media. he knows extreme positions will get him views.

plenty on the right do the same, many commentators are effectively now just an arm of the netanyahu/idf propaganda unit.

to sum up: i'm hopping mad and i want something in the middle

that's an impressive dissection of the rhetoric and tactics of people like jones who condemn hamas as little more than cover to be utterly one sided.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Personally I just like to read a wide variety of news sources and form my own opinion, rather than some social media hot-taker’s view on said news sources.

How did people survive before Twitter telling them what to think?

Spot on, and always check the background/agenda of any source you come across.

And what a damn shame that it is necessary to write this column in 2023.

What the world needs right now is people on sofas saying the first thing that comes into their heads.

It's the future, and we are living it!

He didn't lie about it. He admitted he got it wrong.

And anyone studiously ignoring the genocidal rhetoric coming from the Israeli government and IDF really needs to get their priorities and humanity in order.

The point is that he opined that on a live national TV broadcast, without having checked his facts, and him tweeting an apology/correction later doesn't mean that everyone who saw him make the allegation will see the apology/correction.

It was an ultra-inflammatory accusation to make, and he shouldn't have done so without being "rock" solid on his sources.

It was also an incredibly stupid thing to believe. The idea that the Prime Minister of Israel would swan into the Gaza Strip and stand around for a ceremonial planting photo opportunity is utterly ridiculous.

It was a direct quote from Netanyahu's Twitter albeit mistranslated.

Nothing surprises me with Netanyahu et al. Even Jones's "ultra-inflammatory accusation" pales into insignificance against the actual genocidal rhetoric used re: Amalek and more.

I mean it is a ridiculous notion from a security point of view. Not that he wouldn't be up for grandstanding, but if his motorcade Zoomed into Northern Gaza Strip, every rocket Hamas owns would be raining down on the site within minutes.

I have kept my comments to Owen Jones on the thread, in the main, as per Phil's request to keep comments that are specifically about the conflict to one major thread.

But, for the record, I am 100% opposed to Netanyahu's war crimes in the Gaza Strip (including attacks on a church which was sheltering members of the Gaza Christian community, not renowned Hamas supporters) the odious IDF 10 for 1 approach with regard to civilian deaths, and the opportunistic attacks on West Bank communities by Israeli "settlers" (weird how they are never called paramilitaries, or terrorists, when they are deliberately forcing out ancient settled communities by use of brutality against civilians to instill terror in the West Bank Palestinian population).

So, yes, nothing Netanyahu does can be shocking anymore, apart from a ridiculous disregard for his own safety being sanctioned by Mossad et al!

Fair enough.

But whether it's ridiculous or not, you can also see that this was the information as presented via Twitter. And the real location on the edge of Gaza is of course fully within rocket range.

The important thing is that it was corrected and he apologised for getting it wrong.

agreed, the only thing that is in his favour is that he is prepared to admit his errors and apologise (unlike many right-wing firebrands (or indeed the ex-labour leader!))
