He's absolutely dreadful! Shocking attitude as well. so lazy.

watched him before kick off and after they came out for the second half. he was the only one who put zero effort in to the drills both times. A lack of ability is frustrating, a lack of effort is unforgiveable. Showed on both goals, lazy defeding sitting off for the 1st, just a lack of being bothered and football ability for the second.

Even if I agree with the attitude opinion, which I'm unsure if I do, is it a leftover from the Evans days of "that'll do" which seemed to bleed around the club, both physically and mentally, over the last few seasons? Cook understandably decided the only way to deal with this from the playing squad side was a near complete overhaul.

I do wonder what our approach to the academy will be in the long run - Ashton has already made it clear we have no interest in becoming Category A. I think we may well scrap it and take the Brentford approach of signing players who have not quite made the grade elsewhere but have potential; see the likes of Penney, Edmundson and Harper from this transfer window alone.

I completely agree the Evans era is to blame. I can imagine that's exactly why they are, the way they are. Now Evans has gone, they need to as well & lets give the academy a complete overhaul whilst we're at it. I'd love a team full of academy players, but if they aren't up to it (which almost all have proved in the last few years) I'd rather us bring in better players from elsewhere, which is exactly what Cook is doing.

He really needs a Big Al, or Mowbray alongside him for a season or two - someone who leads by example, who can give him a rollicking at times and an arm round the shoulder at other times. Someone he really respects as the better player.

I sincerely hope you are right Vic. I can’t believe Ashton/ Cook have not seen and got those type of CB targets on their radar…..coz we bloody need that type of player in ASAP. Two hairy arsed CB’s, plus Coulson signing and I think we’ll look a far better unit at the back giving us a foundation to build on.

At the minute we have no leader at the back, and just about every player in that back four currently has a mistake in them.

We don't need a Big Al or a Mowbray, we need a Big Al AND a Mowbray plus a Butcher and a Beattie. .......

That should sort it........

Every side would like two leaders; how easy that is to accomplish is another matter altogether. Manchester City's best defensive pairing of last season was a leader and a follower, as was United's, as is Liverpool's when van Dijk is fit. If we can get two leaders through the door it will be a fantastic result.

Plus Stockton waltzed past our whole defence for the first, not just Woolfenden.

reminded me of the ‘infamous’ Marsden goal…

If we’re giving out blame for the first goal then what about KVY’s dreadful header into the danger zone across goal which caused the problem by giving it to Stockton? And Wolf wasn’t alone in failing to get a tackle in.

Second goal was weak from him a very poorly overhit pass back from Penney didn’t help.

This is league one; we’re not going to get defenders who don’t make mistakes

You know for this works Illy, people need one scapegoat to blame for everything. LW wasn’t great yesterday but, as you say, there were multiple errors for both goals. The second is just a mistake, the first truly awful defending all round.

You are correct. LW wasn't solely to blame yesterday. for the first goal anyway. second wasn't the best pass back to him but how he dealt with it was pathetic., just lazy.

However, it's game after game for the 2 seasons that go before it. The fact that people blindly stand up for him because he's an academy product make things even worse for me. It's not just his errors that lead to goals either, I continually hear he's a ball playing CB, but he constantly hits long balls to no one.

Shouldn't players playing professional football at this level be competent in their own right. Surely they shouldn't need the company of an experienced player beside them to be able to function at the desired level?

The love for Woolf should be wearing thin.....

Kevin Beattie used to say how Big Al used to organise him in his early days and how important this was to becoming the player that he did.

He was poor for most of last season but came back and finished it well. He just caught on the ball for the second goal, it wasn’t lazy, just a mistake.

In my opinion he has the potential to be a very, very good player. But he is young for a CB and his character and style of play means that he will have a few mistakes in him - rather like a young Titus a few years ago. Sadly I don’t think he’ll get time here because we’re bound to br8ng a couple of experienced/better CB’s in before long.

If he was in his mid 20s yes, but 22 is young for a centre back.

I could say the dislike of Woolfenden is wearing thin but then criticising academy players rather than giving them time seems to be a thing for a fair number of our fanbase.

He's just not good enough. Nothing personal from my point of view, just annoys me the level of hype surrounding him (which is not his fault at all). I think if you take off the blue tints, he lacks the basics he needs to be a good defender. Matt Clarke and Adam Webster are very good comparisons to make. At the same age as LW they were standout performers in this division and the championship and didn't need to have someone constantly covering for their mistakes. He is nowhere near their level.

He had the potential to be up has dropped back slightly. If he had maintained his level (and the club had helped him to do so) he probably wouldn’t be with us now.

i know i'm knocking on at 72 and my memory isn' what it was , but didn't osman and butcher fend for themselves, at a young age as a c.b. pairing

We got no real leaders there have we? Hopefully Edmondson has something about him but we really are desperate for a seasoned CB to come in and lead from the back. Woolfy just doesn’t seem up for it enough for my liking.
