WOW - what a season people! - what was your favourite game??.... 10:26 - Apr 30 with 5132 viewsunstableblue

.... I haven't enjoyed watching Town and a season as much as perhaps the Burley years, or one under Royle... a fantastic group of players who you could really connect with, a simply brilliant young and upcoming manager, and a CEO and ownership group committed to improving the club and connection with the community.

And just what an achievement to get out of this league in this specific season - I know I know I I know we all like to hate on League One, but Plymouth and Sheff Weds have made this a right old battle royale - Sheff Weds may finish on 96 points and not get automatic. Remarkable. And the likes of Bolton, Barnsley, Derby, Peterborough have provided stern tests along the way - what a brutal play-offs we have avoided and the Owls must now endure.

So my blue family on this remarkable journey WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE GAME? in terms of performance on the pitch, opposition, atmosphere and importance?

So many for me, so so many... but I'm going:

Bolton (A) and our 2-0 win!!

Bizarrely I wasn't even there, only managed to watch via a (ahem) short visit to Spain. And you'd think the in-person Barnsley and Posh away days or the Derby home win would eclipse due to the atmosphere alone. But I thought we came of age in that game, we truly did go up a gear, conquered a rival. We looked so so strong.

So what's your fave and a reason?

Port Vale at home was ridiculously tense. The team got so much momentum from that and the five minute spell at Barnsley where we killed that game.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

What a question. I'm not sure of the answer either.

Charlton at home, probably. Exorcised some of the ghosts from the 4-4.

I've had a good think and I'm giving it to Exeter at home! The before, afters, insane first 30 and the stands. What a day!

My previous answer would have been Barnsley because the away end was something else, and that result was the one, but having almost everyone in to share in the festivities wins.

Fleetwood away when we scored our 100th goal and when the final whistle went and we'd achieved 100 points. I still can't believe Port Vale got a 97th minute equaliser!

deflected equaliser you mean..😉

Portsmouth at home. Pegged back twice, Colby on the wind-up but we still found a way to win with Burns grabbing the decisive goal.

Also a mention of FGR at home because this was the match when Luongo came off the substitutes bench and immediately oozed class as well as being the start of the scintillating run of games that has seen us promoted.

I was going to say Pompey at home, they were noisy in the ground and on media before.

Their fans were good (in fairness) and the game followed a great script.

Easy to forget a game like that as things went awry between that and this incredible run we’ve been on.

There are so many moments across a season and they all play a part. Barnsley will live long in the memory. Hirst’s goal was a huge moment. I haven’t celebrated like that for a while. These last 15 games have obviously got us over the line, but some of the points we had to grind out earlier this season are no less significant.

After 70 minutes at Accrington I thought it was gonna be ‘one of those days’ until Chappers came off the bench

Also, the win at Morecambe after a poor first half and missing a penalty. Even young Cam Humphreys getting the equaliser at Lincoln on a day when we weren’t at our best. Not hugely memorable but important points that all contributed to the tally.

Clearly these last few away games have been incredible and two 6-0 victories is quite a thing to happen as well.

Aside from Barnsley I loved the 2nd half of the Port Vale game. Probably the only game in this run that's actually felt tense. The relief of the pen going in was brilliant.

Port Vale is a shout especially for moment, rather than game for me. I celebrated that Broadhead goal harder than probably any of our goals in weeks, arguably all season. Just give how late in the game it was, and how vital 3 points were. That was a pressure penalty which set up those 2 away games perfectly.

Game had to be Saturday, it’s one thing thinking we’re going up but getting that confirmation and in the style we did was perfect. I was so confident we would do it, everything pointed to it and it’s nice to arrive at PR expecting rather than hoping. Very much felt like it did under Burley. 2nd half was a bit of a non event but you would take that if it means being 5-0 up after half an hour.

Derby away is close as well. Excellent performance, great away day.

Favourite away games have to be Derby and Peterborough. I hate both teams and to beat them like we did was incredible. The atmosphere at both was amazing.

Most hated away game was Oxford. Apart from not being able to watch any of it through the fog, the fact it was allowed to continue and Oxford won was very disappointing.

As for home games I think the Portsmouth one was the most memorable.

Peterborough away - best atmosphere
Barnsley away - best overall due to importance
Charlton away - mental experience
Sheff Weds home - bit of a turning point

We’ll be good again... one day

My favourite thing (not game) about the season has been about Kieran McKenna's development and vindication. Throughout , his mantra has been "don't get too high on the highs, don't get too low on the lows, trust the process. One game at a time".
When all around were asking questions about what had gone wrong, doubting him doubting the players........he maintained his belief, composure and kept focus on the task. And that has not only galvanised the fans, but the owners will now have much greater belief that even when results aren't going our way, as they won't at some times, Kieran is the one. He will get us to where we want to get to.
If there is a single game that displayed that, I'd go Sheff weds at home, that was when the fightback commenced.

Poll: would you rather

Weirdly enough, the one that really sticks out to me is port vale at home. That was the night when I knew we’d do it - the fact we managed to get through a game like that and get the result we so dearly needed gave me far more satisfaction than any of the really comfortable wins. It was exactly the kind of game that we would have never won precariously. The relief when that pen went in!!

Ah yes Accrington away! I was there.

Great pre-match pub, and great to tick another ground off.

But to be clear my overriding thought is that was a ground and facility that was just not the right level for Town to be playing at!!

We were on a run of away results but were still finding our feet as a team, and interesting to see the selection:
Town: Walton, Donacien, Woolfenden, Burgess, Burns (Ball 89), Evans, Morsy (c), Davis (G Leigh 81), Harness (Ahadme 90), John-Jules (Chaplin 61), Jackson (Ladapo 61). Unused: Hladky, Keogh. Referee: Anthony Backhouse (Cumbria). Att: 3,069 (1,098).

But you’re so right that that was a game previously were Town would have slipped failed to get a goal… but Chappers came up with the goods

It would have to Barnsley away for me due to the amazing atmosphere and result. Bolton away was a great turning point.

A special mention to Port Vale away, the Cameron Humphrey’s goal and post game celebration was brilliant to see.

Yes Trueblues 78, you’re right to highlight Port Vale away

A cracking game… again not sure we were yet at our imperious best

But crucial 3 points and during our pre-Luongo Centre mid challenge where Humphreys stood up and delivered the goods… with Morsy also out that day.. yet we still got the 3 points

Town: Walton, Donacien (c), Woolfenden, Edmundson (Keogh 75), Burns (Burgess 90), Ball, Humphreys, Davis, Chaplin (Harness 65), Edwards (Jackson 75), Ladapo (John-Jules 65). Unused: Hladky, Camara. Referee: Andrew Kitchen (Durham). Att: 7,928 (Town: 1,725).

Favourite was definitely Barnsley away, atmosphere was immense, and to win against a team who had won their last 9 home games, in the manner we did, was a statement, and the time I knew we were going to do it.

Honourable mention to FGR away, first away game of the season, and the whole experience of getting to a very picturesque ground in the middle of nowhere, sun shining, 3 points, great day.
Wouldn’t fancy going there in winter mind!!

Great shout FGR! Glad we don't have to go back but a unique experience! Bus journey through beautiful
Cotswolds countryside quite something.

Hopefully we’ll look back on FGR and say “were we really playing league football in a 4K capacity stadium!!!

But it’s a game we had to win, and we did… and just look at what happened to the Owls!

Bolton was amazing. Felt like we might actually have a chance of going up.

Derby was amazing. Felt like we actually were the best team in the league and we might just catch the top two.

Peterborough was amazing. Felt like we were definitely going to go up.

Barnsley was amazing. Felt like we were there.

Exeter was amazing. We were f***ing there.

Barnsley edges it for me, ahead of Posh and then Exeter for the occasion. But could have those in any order really. That’s just the last week!!!

Can’t look beyond those for the top five and that excludes smashing play off hopefuls Wycombe 4-0, beating in-form Charlton 6-0 and shout eight other matches we won 3-0 or 4-0, some of which don’t even make the top 10.

Then there’s the thriller over Pompey at home, Derby under the lights, the win over Peterborough and the trout epic battles at home and away with Plymouth and Wednesday.

What. A. Season.

Just think in 7 days we had the atmosphere, the emotion and the quality of:

Posh 0 Ipswich 3
Barnsley 0 Ipswich 3
Ipswich 6 Exeter 0

There occasions you might get 3 of over a season and we had it in a week!!

Incredible
