I am so proud to be anIpswich fan Norwich just can’t compete with that

(Colchester's record attendance was in 2019, away at Old Trafford in the League Cup quarter-final. 55,000 or so, I think) But this Essex team had much bigger, as big as any crowd Town has played in front of, I think. (I could be wrong.) |
Would it be someone like Walthamstow from when the top amateur sides drew enormous crowds?

It was the Amateur Cup final at Wembley, and drew a crowd of 100,000.

Doesn’t Texaco Cup count?

All this talk of massive clubs on 11:12 - Jun 8 by Herbivore | We certainly aren't a massive club, or even a big club. We punched above our weight and won three major trophies in a twenty year spell but before that we weren't up to much and since then we've spent more time in the second and third tiers than in the top flight. I've been going to Town games for 34 years and we've only had 5 seasons in the top division in that time. That's not the record of a big club, and in terms of things like fan base we're alongside a whole raft of similar size clubs whose natural level is probably the second tier but with the ability to punch above our weight from time to time. I don't think our haul of three major trophies, as amazing as it was for us to achieve them, is something we can dine off forever. |
My only point of order would be your grouping of the second and third tiers, as frankly our spell in the third has been surreal. Hopefully not to be seen in our lifetimes again! Otherwise the history is beautiful but it doesn't mask the past 20 years, agreed.

In my time going to PR, since the late 80s, we've only had one less season in the third tier than in the top flight. That's really quite depressing.

Oh for sure, rubbish it has been, my first full season watching was in 2002/3 😂, but it speaks to the paucity of top flight seasons rather than our association with third tier football. Let's not be too unkind to ourselves! The Championship will be comforted by our return home.

Let's hope we get out of it the right way this time, and that it takes a lot less than 16 years.

We're certainly not up with the best big clubs, absolutely nowhere near. We're probably somewhere around 30th in English football I would say when you consider all the factors. Which is no disgrace at all.
