Other than the Cambridge game, with 3 late goals to make it look easier than it was, we've been stuttering a little for a while now (can probably go right back to early September for the last convincing win).

I would say the 3 late goals against Cambridge were a perfectly fair reflection of a game that saw us have 70% possession and limit them to no shots on target.
I don't think tonight will be a battering, Port Vale have hosted Pompey, Bolton and Sheffield Wednesday this season and only conceded 2 goals across the 3 games. They also went away to Derby 2 weeks ago and won. It'll be a tough game, especially given the injuries we've got. Would be a massive 3 points if we can win. |  |

We’ll give someone a thumping by scoring an early goal and forcing them to come at us and open up.
But, more generally, while we’re given the respect of being automatic promotion favourites and sides are happy to try and contain us, the games will be a lot tighter and scrappier.
I think we can see that as a positive though and a clear indication that we’re heading in the right direction. This is what automatic promotion sides look like and what they have to deal with. |  |

So basically - Sheff weds went there and won. Portsmouth went there and won. Bolton went there and drew. Those results suggest that they are not good enough to beat the best teams, of which we are one of the best. So we should get something from the game. But a thumping - probably not. |  |

There's been a lot of focus on us missing Evans and Morsy but remember Chaplin and Edwards are fresh after not playing at the weekend, Ladapo didn't get many minutes v Derby and overall we've had an extra day's rest compared to Vale.
Not saying it's going to be easy, but we have one of the most miserly defences in the league and Vale have struggled to keep goals out, and will be facing our attack which always creates chances.

Absolutely nutty some of the complacency on here. I've predicted 1-1 and reckon anything more than that away at Port Vale with new CM partnership would be one of our results of the season. I used to like Port Vale under John Rudge. Always tried to play football, would come to PR with those beliefs, and generally get a thumping.
Was never quite so easy at their place. And it won't be tonight. After tonight we'll be more than a 1/3rd of the way through the season so 4 points from this game and Charlton would be most welcome before it quietens down a bit. |  |
