Always thought of him as nothing more than a bit part player for Spurs but he started the Champions League final for them and made 200 appearances for them. And has 10 England caps. That’s a great career yet I wouldn’t recognize him if he sat down next to me.

Leicester not hanging around on 08:48 - Jul 2 with 2373 views | LegendofthePhoenix | Sky / BT not content with ruining the top division, they are ruining the Championship with parachute payments as well. The (flawed) justification of parachute payments was to stop clubs going broke due to relegation with players on Premier wages. Now what we see is the top earners being sold for huge sums, and the combination of parachute payments and sales proceeds is allowing those same relegated teams to splurge £10Ms on fees that are just way beyond the rest of the division. Anyone might think they want to see the same 23 teams in the PL and yo-yoing up from the Championship every other season.

Not saying I don't agree with you but genuine question; was it Sky/BT who decided on the parachute model or the Prem teams who came up with that idea?

Surely the idea of parachute payments was not so much to stop clubs going bust but to allow clubs that are promoted to 'give it a go' when they get up? Otherwise smaller clubs (like Brentford say) would not have been able to risk signing anyone and would have just gone up, played a PL season of damage limitation, contributed very little to the spectacle, and meekly returned whence they came. Knowing that the club isn't going to crash and burn if it's relegated has allowed a well-run club like Brighton to bring something to the table.

Feels like his career has gone backwards a bit as he should be reaching his prime. He's a tidy player but is he someone to get you out of the Championship? Seems an odd signing to me I have to be honest. Coady looks the more solid choice of the two.

That's the same point. It was supposed to be to protect them from going bust if and when they (or anyone else) get relegated, i.e. they can start paying colossal sums on long contracts upon promotion, knowing that the parachute will protect them if they don't survive. What we are seeing is that the payments are allowing teams like Leicester to spend £10M sums on new players in the championship. No one else (without parachute payments) can do that. It is distorting the Championship, so that relegated teams have a huge advantage before a ball gets kicked.

He probably thinks that the pinnacle of his career will be when he walks out at PR next season and sees just how good a McKenna team is

I mean of course I take your point, but it would be sad if a club like Luton went up, and didn't dare strengthen because the consequences would to be too gruesome if they got it wrong. Leicester aren't rich simply because of parachute payments. They have bought players for a fraction of what they've sold players for. The fact is simply that Town are now back playing with some of the 'big kids' again. Now it's time to show that team spirit, desire, tactical acumen, vocal support can compete with teams with substantially bigger budgets, ... just as Plymouth did last season. Luton, Coventry and newly-promoted Sunderland finished top six last season. Burnley (with their parachute payments) deserved to go up, completely reinventing their playing style.

Yet these two average players that no Prem club wants apparently are worth half a Maddison. You do realise you follow a franchise that spent £25 million more than it earned just to beat a couple of destitute clubs to promotion from division 3?
