That’s not really true, is it?

Kind of is. The fee for Davis is huge for this level.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Where did he say that?

I read his pre match words and read that just because you are a big club, have history or have spent the most money does not guarantee anything.

Think it was a catch all quote rather than aimed at anyone in particular and stating how hard it is to get out of this div.

Our wage bill will Top 2 in the division. As it stands the two biggest transfer fees paid in the division are likely Leif Davis and Marcus Harness.

How else would you describe that?

Possibly but we also had a nice payment from the Downes transfer to offset.

He will no doubt be aware of other costs such as agents fees, wages, signing on fees etc as well so may be including this

We've spent a lot but if you take the Downes sell on fee into consideration our net transfer spend is very healthy.

Part of the game, isn't it.

No doubt we have one of the biggest budgets in League 1, but he'll just be saying this to create an underdog mentality and make sure they're bang up for it.

Us spending north of 1.5m on a left back means we'll get a lot of this. IMO we've two more big money signings to come, so we'd best get used to it.

In context that quote was self-directed I think, as in "we are a big club, but no guarantees"

It is true. Davis is a huge fee. Ladapo probably on a high wage, imagine he is only second to Morsy. John Jules won't be cheap to loan. We just have to accept we are going to get this now.

I wouldn't describe our trading as vast amounts this summer. By my reckoning:

In: Ladapo, Ball, Leigh, Davis, Harness, John-Jules.
3 x free transfers, 1 x loan, 2 x fees totalling what, £1.5m initially?

Out:

Holy, Thompson, Celina, Pigott, Norwood, Kenlock, Bakinson, Carroll, Dobra, Bonne.
4 loans ending, 5 released, 1 loaned out.

Plus Fraser, Nolan and Nsiala who moved on back in Jan. Plus £1m+ windfall in recently from the Downes transfer.

I dare say our wage bill today probably isn't any higher than it was in May, if anything I would think the 6 in are on less than the 10 out when you consider Bonne, Norwood, Celina, Pig wouldn't be cheap (I imagine we're still paying some of Pigs wage). Our transfer spend isn't a huge amount higher than what we're entitled to from Downes going to West Ham.

I think we've traded pretty prudently thus far if you're talking about this summer specifically. You could definitely argue we were starting from a high base relative to some clubs though, we've definitely got a healthy budget.

Our football spending (wages and agents’s fees more than transfer or loan fees per se) looks very high.

Not that this is necessarily a bad thing but a complete overhaul of the squad, the coaching and the entire football structure is a massive investment at this level.

No, but they all get it in nice and early to appease their respective fan bases after we've given them a good hiding. 'we lost 3-0 today because Ipswich spent more money than us'.

Fit's the narrative.

Your figure's way off fella. It was a lot more than £1.5m for Davis alone.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

That high? I thought it was in the region of £1m initially for Davis? One Leeds journo said £900k + add ons.

Yeah it was £1m initially, plus £500k add ons... so that isn't going to drop to £900k + add ons after haggling! Phil has said elsewhere it's definitely more than £1.5m He's also said it breaks the record for a defender in this league.

Not sure there's really anything to be gained about being defensive around these sorts of accusations. We've had recent reports about the owners injecting more cash, our last accounts showed us spending far in excess of our revenues.

We are spending money, lots of it, to get out of this division.
You see Liverpool and Manchester City fans arguing about net spend and all that nonsense, there's no dignity in it. We are what we are, a club that's investing serious capital in the hope of a longer term return.

Wasn’t being defensive, more about pointing out the fact it’s not necessarily true. But it is a fool’s errand to pick apart pre match pressers. Anyway it is what it is and the sooner we’re out of this bastard division the better.

Clearly it’s good for motivation and also in the event of a defeat a convenient excuse, ignore.
I would think Saturday will be very tough considering how they finished the season.

Don't think there was anything that concrete about the Davis fee, was there?

Bournemouth's loan deal had a £1.5m permanent transfer clause which they chose not to trigger. You'd imagine that would've been the absolute ceiling for any up-front money.

£1m initially then + £600k for Harness, as it stands today. Might prove to be more than that down the line but so might our income from Downes as the West Ham deal no doubt included an element of add ons.

Don't think anyone was looking to gain anything by being defensive, just a discussion as to whether it's a fair comment. Depends on your definition of 'vast amounts' I guess. By some standards it is, there's clubs at this level who can only dream of having players on £5k a week +, but equally they're probably not getting 26,000 people watching them on Saturday.

This summer specifically I wouldn't say its vast amounts, as it stands today. But I also think we're not done yet.

Part of the physcology from managers, won't be the last manager to say it this season.

He isn't factually incorrect at all, but they do conveniently miss the part where we've nearly generated as much as we've spent, and moved some decent earners off the wage bill; Norwood, Pigott, Celina.

As Phil has said elsewhere, it's between £1.5m-£2m just on Davis.
