Looks like another great sporting event is getting ruined next week 04:57 - May 24 with 43006 viewsThe_Romford_Blue

1,000 Animal Rising protesters turning up to ruin the Derby at Epsom. Track has applied for an injunction to ban them or they’ll ruin it but even if they get the injunction (unlikely I’d imagine), it’ll be a nightmare stopping them with Epsom’s course layout. Epsom, unlike Aintree, is an open track and getting on to ruin it will not be that difficult unfortunately. It’s part of a public footpath when racing isn’t on to the side of the course so can be accessed if people want to quite easily. They’ve specifically said today in writing and in a meeting with the course that they plan to turn up and ruin both days by sitting on the track.

So that’ll be another sporting event I’m in attendance that these tw*ts ruin. That’s if I even get there with the now added train strike announced conveniently three days ago. Two days off work, train tickets, race day tickets at £140 a pop per day and it’ll probably end up cancelled anyway because it’s 2023 and nothing I like doing goes without someone sitting in the way trying to ruin it.

I doubt TWTD is the place to moan about this though as, like with the Snooker World Championship last month, the racing isn’t something the majority on here enjoy so it’s ok. They’ll no doubt target a town game soon just to really make me despise them. Protest for protest sake. There’s always something someone somewhere disagrees with and will then protest about and attempt to ruin.

What a depressing time to be a human being.

Firstly, I’ve no idea who you think you are but you’re deeply unpleasant.

Secondly, you’re a clearly massively anti racing person so are bias. Which is fine. But you also have provided zero evidence that isn’t also hugely biased.

Thirdly, as has been explained to you, I’ve posted about racing on here for ten years, have posted in multiple 20 page welfare threads on here and been in and around dozens of racing yards. To suggest I am avoiding you (more because you’re an awful person and rude in all honesty) because I am unaware of how the industry works is laughable.

What if someone asked you politely? If in the future evidence came out that showed horses were hurt in the process would you support a ban?

Find me a bit of actual evidence for that and we will have that conversation. But seeing as you can’t as none exist and those with far more knowledge than yourself say it doesn’t, then the conversation is pointless as or you’re doing is trying to cause an argument. And nobody wants that.

I've posted a scientific study showing that horse skin feels pain in the same way as human skin.

So if you believe that using a whip on a human will cause pain then by extension, the same is true for a horse.

I assume you couldn't find those other stats you promised? That's fine - no need for you to go hunt them out but it's often a good idea to have sources available if you're going to make a claim.

Society as a whole is split pretty much 50/50 on whether they support a ban in horse racing in fairness.

Should say split 50/50 (or 33/33/33 ish) rather than 50% being in favour for the sake of clarity

And apologies, should have linked to that in the original statement but I think the point stands

The best critique of the BHRA association position I've found is this one (and being from the NiH is hardly biased here)

But you're right, it's the evidence that most fits the position that's believed and not the strongest evidence

An Ipswich game doesn't harm animals. Unless you're including some of the carthorses we've employed over the years.

But it does harm the planet as i said earlier in the thread.

Of course I’d be against the whip if it was actually hurting horses. But that’s why it’s a padded soft end rather than something that could hurt them.

It should go without saying that I’d be against anything that would be made to hurt an animal.

You posted that study that it feels the same for horses and humans. Which I don’t disagree with.

But that goes back to my previous point that as someone who has felt a racing whip, I can assure you it does not hurt. You could hit me with it as hard as you like and it wouldn’t hurt. There are literally dozens of videos out there of celebrities ting the racing whip on their hands and realising it has no real feeling. That was from a couple of years ago the BHA trying to raise awareness of the image of the sport and one of those sections involved the whip. So we had celebrities (more influencers and love island types in all honesty) feeling a racing whip in action to educate younger people about this affect and feeling.

I’ll try to find those stats today. It’s not an easy find but I will endeavour to. Unless I find them, you won’t believe me even though I’ve never been anything but honest on here. Arguably too honest. But I shall try to find them. It’ll just take a while to scroll back.

Fair enough, at least you're consistent in your position that it doesn't hurt for humans and thus won't for horses.

That does seem to contradict the Australian racing lobby who made changes based on the study but at least you're internally consistent.

Don't worry about the stats, I'm not going to have much time to come back to you about them over the weekend anyway. It's not that I don't believe you that you saw the stats, it's that I would like to see the methodology and implementation of any study that produced the stats.

This is going from memory but I’m pretty sure the issue in fields for the wild and semi-wild horses was to do with minor colic going untreated. That was one of a couple of similar things of that nature. Seeing as how quickly it goes from a small issue to a life-threatening one, I’m guessing the lack of eyes on the horses are what is the issue.

Whereas every racehorse has their own groom with them for literally hours every day, their own work rider who can notice any difference in breathing etc during activity, vets on hand 24/7 in the yard and I suppose more importantly are surrounded by people who’ve been around horse racing all their life. It’s common that work riders go over to their first yards aged 15 or 16 and live there. So most yards have a combination of youngsters learning their trade and people who’ve been around horses for 40 years or whatever. Add to that the horses get blood tests, etc almost daily and that also helps for spotting things early.

Obviously 200 horses dying a year on the tracks is awful. But the actual percentage of racehorses who die compared to the rest living long and happy lives treated like kings for 30 years is a tiny minority. Whereas those in fields are at higher risk percentage wise of dying because very small issues become dangerous ones.

Again, it’s worth clarifying that this was from memory. I will try to find it though when I get the chance

There are much bigger fish to fry than football supporters/team buses travelling to games. How do they compare to, say, commuters? Or lorries shipping goods back and forth?

I'd have thought more Deliveroo and Amazon drivers pollute each week than football related stuff.

Trying not to give them too much credit though with the way they treat their employees.
