We're a League One side in the Championship 16:19 - Sep 2 with 11926 viewsNeedhamChris

That's not the fault of the 11 on the pitch - we are going to get beaten regularly if we're not at the top of our game.

They looked well organised which is half the battle. It was right to point out how close they ran Leicester and Leeds and it really wasn’t difficult to see why. Aaron Ramsey was excellent too.

They did well and must have learnt from the Leeds game as Leeds came at us and gave us space to play but equally that then let Leeds play. Cardiff did look organised but seemed to unravel with a little pressure but mainly seemed to be the subs and taking off effective players. That and good options on our bench to cause them different challenges.

We’re realistically a middle tier Championship side and about 3 players from a promotion contender.

I am amazed that this comment got so many down votes.

Do people actually view us as a top 5 side? I think realistically we should finish 11-15th in this league, if we have a great season, we could get around the 5th to 8th mark depending but we won't be promoted in my view, not without a few really good additions.

Next season is another story, but it's an uphill battle against parachute payments in this league.

Carry on 2nd half commitment from last Saturday and we can finish in the top 5.

Your view is also entirely at odds with the OP's then is it not? You believe we should finish in the middle of the pack, which isn't consistent with being a League One side. All the evidence from last season demonstrated that the squad out of place in the division below, even when the dominance was delivering disappointing results.

Realistically based on what?

Performances this year? Last year? Your perception of who we didn’t sign? Your hope that we will finish lower than the mob up the road?

Our first 11 has over 500 championship games between them and Hladky played 47 games in the Scottish Premier games, but don’t let the facts get in the way of a negative post. We are second in the league because, thanks to Kieran and the staff, we were ready for the start of the season unlike almost every CHAMPIONSHIP side in the division. We are not the best team in the division but we are a team.

From memory there has only been 3 instances I can recall that a club achieved back to back promotions from League One to the Championship and then to the Premier League.

Watford 1997-1998 1998-1999
Sc*m 2009-2010 2010-2011
Southampton 2010-2011 2011-2012

If we were statistically the "best" League One team in history then I daresay we have a shot at being the fourth.

P.S. It would have been interesting to see how out current XI matches up to Southampton's 2011 squad with the likes of Schneiderlin, Fonte, Lallana, Oxlade-Chamberlain and R. Lambert which I always felt was the best ever in League One. Besides buying Billy Sharp I don't they made many additions to their squad. Until ours last year!

Meh. Get to 200+ and then its impressive.

On a more serious note about the OP.

Saw a tweet yesterday. The town squad is 4th lowest in value in the whole of the championship.

Therefore we are massively overachieving :)

That must be the OP's view. Because we aren't. This squad can easily finish in the top half.

I imagine these squad values are courtesy of Transfermarkt, which calculates Leif Davis at £1M. Their figures are slow to adjust, are unduly impacted by which league a player has resided in and are in many cases ill-informed guesswork. Player values often leap at this level when the website belatedly catches up, see Sunderland's Jack Clarke for instance. Sunderland's total value was similar to ours last season and they're now in the top 10; they've improved the squad since then but a good league finish also does wonders.

We're surely overachieving based on the individual parts, yet positions change much too readily this early in the season to be issuing adverbs like "massively" in either direction, for my money at least Frimmers old chap!

Point of order.

Statistically we weren't the best League One team last year.

Depends on which statistics you look at. The most important statistic of course is how many points you accrue and on that statistic, we weren't the best. On basically every other statistic we were the best, however. Most goals scored, fewest conceded, best goal difference (by a mile), fewest defeats. That's before getting on to the lesser stats like xG for and against, chances created, possession. Those stats also aligned with the old fashioned eye test, which for most suggested we were far too good for League 1, especially second half of last season, whilst Plymouth were a side doing incredibly well at coming out on the right side of fine margins but we're necessarily head and shoulders above other sides in the division. That's reflected to some degree in the starts the two sides have made in the Championship.

We suddenly look way off it. We have to be at our best all the time. Not enough championship experience in the first team. We really needed to sign that in the transfer window. Too late now, Kieran has to work his magic now and earn his corn.

I decided to have a bit of a break - I can understand the outpour against this post, but it's not how I wanted it to be interpreted.

When I posted this I was sat amongst some vocal people who were unhappy with the performance - and personally didn't get it. We're competing at a level above what we are used to and teams will beat us. Fortunately that didn't happen Saturday.

I had my crazy wobble last February re: McKenna but have been clear that I was wrong and have been thoroughly enjoying every game since.

We are a League One team in the Championship still in my view - but that doesn't mean we can't succeed. It's how I'm managing my expectations this season - this side was a League One team and anything we do other than consolidation in this division is a bonus. There won't be many seasons like that - so I will enjoy it.

This season is bloody brilliant - I have zero expectations other than survival and it's refreshing to not worry about losing on a Saturday being terminal to our hopes for the season. I was pretty content at 2-0 down and just enjoying it, but somehow conspired to appear the most negative on here at the same time.

So...meh - I'd left this alone but clearly some are eagerly awaiting my response. If ever we cross paths in the SBRL we can chat about it and you can hopefully see the positivity, but other than that - I'm just going to stay away from new posts and carry on enjoying it.
