Ineffectual Wingers (with a nod to Radlett for a great phase) 14:02 - Apr 21 with 2922 viewsKeno

is it me or have we had more than our fair share of these over the years?

It all started with Kevin O'Callaghan but we have had some appalling ones haven't we. The basic premise being you are a pro footballer you run with the ball, you cross the ball it shouldnt be that hard should it?

The good ones - Clive Woods, any more anyone?

Bad ones .... Lee Martin ..... Feel free to add to the list

Just before my time unfortunately

I can remember Clive Woods and Mickey Lambert (although I'm not sure he was actually a winger)

I used to work with Roy Stephenson.

But a different Roy Stephenson.

Best 'proper' winger I've seen is Fraser.

Bobby Petta needs mentioning among the good. Didn't get many full seasons out of him but in the second half of 1997/98 he put in the most exciting string of performances I've ever seen from an Ipswich player. Was just unplayable; would love to watch some of those games again. Wasn't bad the following year either.

On seeing this thread they are two that I thought of as good wingers for us.

Rocky Stephenson was part of the 1961/62 team and Jimmy Robertson (along with Frank Clarke) did a lot to keep us in the top division when they both signed in late 1969/70.

Another very good winger for us was Frank Brogan who was one of the successful signings made by Jackie Milburn.

I played cricket against THE Roy Stephenson a couple of times.

Joe Broadfoot.

I liked Joe Broadfoot.

Sometimes he seemed to run so fast that he had to slow down to wait for the ball to catch up-hell of a shot on him too.

Broadfoot was a player that, on his day, brought excitement, a rare commodity.

But without the ball, or if he made unnoticed runs he was like Ian Marshall - a trudger, head-down, all's wrong with the world. Kayden Jackson has a bit of that.

Frank Brogan was very effective as a right-footer cutting in from the left, till Spurs cut him down.

The inspiration for the phrase : Carlos Edwards. Wouldn't take on his man and was seemingly unable to cross beyond the first man from the 16 yard line.
When he was converted to a BF he added in poor defending and starting fitting the first man from crosses just over the halfway line.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

didn't joe become a black cab driver, when he finished playing. i expect he would drive past you ,if you hailed his cab and wait for you to catch up

He was a registered black cab driver whilst he was still playing.

I have got his story written by his son on my Kindle although it is also available in book form.

Jon Walters has probably been our best winger in fairly recent years, and he wasn't even a winger!

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?
