Unpopular opinion of the day 09:45 - Oct 19 with 5654 views | BigManBlue | Scrums just absolutely ruin rugby. Everyone I know who has played at any level loves them, but in terms of spectacle I find them to be incredibly tedious. What am I missing?

Unpopular opinion of the day on 09:47 - Oct 19 with 3921 views | footers | If scrums are done properly then they're brilliant. But that's a big if. Far too many collapse or have to be reset which does ruin it a bit.

That one in the first half that took five minutes... You know it's bad if the commentators are making a disclaimer to new viewers.

I'd still rather watch a scrum being reset than American football.

Very true. I like the idea of American football but I've never managed to actually watch a whole game. The redzone is alright for a couple of hours if, like me, you have a poor attention span and basically just want to watch massive men being clean vaulted by slightly less massive men, and don't care about tactics/any teams/the results.

Harsh. I wouldn’t even say that about cricket.

Sure. But I think it’s a valid point that today the scrums weren’t good. As scrums and for the game.

Would that clock be ticking until the kicking and when it stopped if there had been no kicking then the ref would start ticking off the player who wasn't kicking? Because I can see other players who had been listening to the ticking getting wound up and kicking off about the pressure of the ticking...leading down to the kicking...

Super League brought in a 60 second shot clock this year and it really sped the game up. Would definitely be worth a try.

Unpopular opinion of the day on 12:22 - Oct 19 with 3512 views | Darth_Koont | NZ vs IRE is showing how scrums should go. No twisting, turning or collapsing just an honest contest and Owens didn’t have a decision to make until right at the end of the half. The scrums have added to an excellent half of rugby. Think Owens wouldn’t have had as much patience as Garces with the poor scrums in the Eng vs Aus game.

The rules are what ruin rugby. Nobody understands or even knows all of them anyway except players/past players!

They're not easy for the casual observer but the rules make the game. If it was a free-for-all at the breakdowns you'd soon see why the rules are there as the defenders would kill the ball all the time. Most of these less obvious rules have been brought in to make the game safer for the players and better for the spectator.
