Uprooting your family numerous times is going to take it’s toll, and many players have had the opportunity to spend more time with their families over the last year than usual and probably reflect on this. At this stage in their careers there is more to life than football to consider.

I imagine it's more to do with the fact that they could get paid lets say £500 extra a week at a team up North, but either having to relocate or travel each day - or, stay locally on less money, not have to relocate and barely travel.

Which, at the stage of their careers, they all seem sensible and probably have a lot of cash, that they don't need the hassle.

Judge and Huws to follow

it's a bit, erm what' the word? embarassing? I don't know

You see it on a sunday when then dog and duck manager moves on he picks the phone up and takes his mates with him. But 5 of our first team of 2021, moving to league 2 Colchester and we wonder why performances never improved...........

I appreciate Paul Knows's post above, but apart from Huws whos' legs have never seemed to recover.. surely all the others should be wanting to end their careers at the highest level possible.

But why would they up sticks, relocate family, relocate kids in schools for an extra £500 or so a week? They don't need at their age/times in their careers. Sears is a local lad anyway, still lives in Coggeshall as it is, he never moved when he joined Town.

Lets not forget, before last season, Colchester had always been in and around the play offs. Given these signings, who you would expect them to perform at that level, they may add a medal/promotion to their CV's and be playing League 1 football soon again.

As much as it was time for them to move on, I can certainly see their thinking behind them moves.

Even more so for Chambers and Skuse, who I'm in no doubt will end up in some coaching capacity there, such is the way Colchester run that side of things, and again, you can't blame them.

Fair enough, I should've made it a bit clearer that he lived in Coggeshall at the time of his move to Ipswich and hasn't moved since. So it's a no brainer for him to return really - especially as the other option for him was Leyton Orient, and whilst it's not a million miles away, the move to Col U made sense.

I guess it's a common phenomenon across the country that people who support their local team kind of despise people who don't. People just don't like 'glory-hunters'. I know Chesterfield fans who can't stand Sheffield Wednesday. By far the most obvious group of people in Colchester not supporting their local club are traditionally Ipswich fans waiting for the train north, though with West Ham having moved to just a few stops in the other direction down the line, this is changing. There are no doubt Braintree fans who despise Colchester fans in Braintree. Meanwhile Colchester fans in Sudbury or Harwich, say, (and there are a few) would tend not to have any problem with Ipswich, seeing it as a reasonable choice.

I don't see why that's hard to understand. Put simply, nobody likes a 'glory-hunter'.

And after a bit of noisy posturing in the first instance, Colchester fans will mostly have no problem with ex-Ipswich players, as historically they have tended to do the business. (Obviously, in days gone by the gap in quality between the teams was considerably bigger, with players like Stockwell, Dozzell, Whitton etc dropping down two or three leagues rather than one, but even now most fans now can see the sense of getting in some cut-price experience and, by League 2 standards, quality.

Sears one I wasn't shocked with it's kinda Home for him

But the others, Skuse for me could do a job still in league 1, chambers the same, judge, huws probably not, Judge... definately can.

I get the relocating thoughts, but they wouldn't need to if they didn't want to, there are ways to work with it as some players do. Im just suprised by it all and the lack of desire to want to achieve something at the last opportunity.

I get what you mean about colchester previous years, but they had to take a loan out prior to covid to help cover financail costs, sold some players to help ontop of this and following covid are given out 2 year deals to late 30 somethings. It's all rather odd.

Interesting that apart from Dozzell, the rest that have moved on have either moved sideways to another L1 club or to L2, which confirms that our squad wasn’t good enough, however much we wanted to believe they were.

But that's just hassle isn't it? Hassle which at 34/35, they don't need because their comfortable and well off. As I say, I suspect they see Col U as a place to put a medal/promotion on their CV and be back in League 1 soon. I wouldn't say it's lack of desire, more than just an understanding of where they're at in their careers.

As for the state of Col U at present, I suspect there hope is that fans/revenue will return to relative normality over the next few weeks/months and their in a position to give it a go this season, rather than treading water like they did last season.

Time will tell, but I still don't blame them in the slightest.
