Chambo has spoken on 10:01 - Dec 5 by GlasgowBlue | I think Cook, and even Ashton, should have moved heaven and earth to sell a long term project, backed with the Americans money, to Downes and Dozzell. That is my issue with how the former academy players were handled. Cook didn’t try to stop them leaving because he didn’t want them. And for people saying that Downes had been wanting to play at a higher level, well so did Morsy, Harper, Edmunson, Bonne, Edwards, Penney, Celina, Aluko. All dropped down a division to play for “Chequebook United”. No effort was made with Downes and Dozzell. That didn’t feel right to me. |
Very well put GB | |

Very good point and they were probably the only two that we could have built around. I wonder whether the balancing of finances meant we had to sell some players to be able to wheel and deal as such, and these two were the only ones worth enough to be able to make the signings we did. Think there was a post a little while back, saying the transfer fees in and out were similar - certainly would have been a big spend, without the sale of Downes or Dozzell.

Downes definitely. Would I keep Dozzell, on paper, over Morsy, Evans or Carroll? No. Think I’d even sign Harper over Dozzell in theory although there have clearly been issues with all of them in practice.

Embarrassing comment, although not surprising. It was clear from very early on you wanted Cook to fail.

You'd keep a load of players who haven't yet impressed in a mid table league 1 team, over a player who has established himself as a regular in a team sitting 5th in the league above? Righto.

I thought it was interesting that he retains a photo of himself at Ipswich as his twitter photo. I think in hindsight Id still have had another year of Chambers at centre half along with Edmundson. Id also say he'd probably be interested if the managers job was offered to him. Im not convinced though that we'd see super attractive football. And I do still want that. I want good football, where we keep possession in a progressive way.

That’s what I mean by ‘on paper’ - in the summer I thought they were the right moves to get the club going forward. And, considering his performances here over the last two seasons, where he showed little more than sparks of promise, did I expect Dozzell to have the impact he is at QPR? No. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but I’m not about to say I thought the decisions made were bad at the time.

Fair enough. I always saw the good bits of Dozzell as outweighing the bad bits, and looking at QPR right now I feel I was prob right. No argument from me that he should have done more for us though. Let's hope a new manager does a better job of harnessing the obvious ability that the likes of Evans, Harper and Carroll have!

Barely playing Harper at all was the biggest mystery to me (unless he was carrying a knock I wasn't aware of).

It almost feels like the central midfielders get in each other’s way which is especially odd considering Morsy and Evans played together, under Cook, at Wigan. Something just isn’t working right across the pitch and we’ll have to hope the new manager can work out how to fix it.

He didn't really know what to do with him. Harper wasn't suited to being a sitter in Cook's midfield 2 and he's not a number 10 either. Bit like Fraser really, just didn't obviously fit Cook's preferred system.

Got to question why he bought him then!

Exactly this. Not exactly difficult to see.

Have to ask how many of the signings were Cook’s.

Perhaps he didn't and it was actually Ashton? I now wonder how many of these players were Cook players or Ashton players... Likes of Walton, Morsy, Chaplin and Evans definitely signed to play under Cook, but we all know about Ashton and his data dash board..

I've always enjoyed your contributions both here, and on BM Joe, but have thought since Cook arrived that your opinions have been clouded by emotion due to your closeness to Chambers and maybe other players at the club. It's always occurred to me (and this is purely guesswork) that Cook may have changed his mind on keeping Chambers on when clearly the player had loose lips and was criticising the manager in public. I would guess the discussion that appeared on here wasn't the only time. I may be wrong of course but even so that tweet by Chambers was completely unnecessary and showed a lack of class. As we move on I look forward to your continual insights unburdened by any personal feelings. What's gone has gone. [Post edited 5 Dec 2021 11:24]

They don’t have to now be doing well to have been treated badly do they.

I said this for months. There is no way PC bought everyone. But that's not saying ashton took over. PC made it clear he wanted everyone out The delay in getting players in for me showed he failed to get those he wanted... we know he tried and failed to get more Wigan players. Imo leam staying at Wigan ruined it for PC target wise.

Many people in here have showed a “lack of class” if that’s your yardstick. Certain TWTDers love dishing it out and hate taking some back don’t they. Cook ballsed it up and Chambo had a little dig so what? The way some of these Mary’s are carrying on you’d think he shot their dog.

Chambo has spoken on 11:30 - Dec 5 with 2066 views | jayessess | We're constantly hearing on here that last season's squad were "total wasters", who "downed tools". Cook's public comments last season massively contributed to that perception. A little schadenfreude on their part seems reasonable to me.
