Local councils are taking some decisions out of the governments hands 13:16 - Dec 14 with 3240 viewsStokieBlue

Greenwich and Islington have said that schools are closing from tomorrow even whilst Boris is making a statement saying all schools should remain open.

He's losing a bit of control, assuming he had any to begin with.

All getting a bit silly now.

The government have sent legal letters to the councils saying the schools have to stay open and if they don't they will enforce it through the courts.

Threatening to take local councils to court for prioritising the safety of their residents is definitely a good look. What a bunch of morally bankrupt incompetents. I note that literally nobody on here now has the stones to even attempt to offer up a defence.

That's the thing, this government is utterly useless politically, basic political nous escapes it.
The sole exception being playing to the ERG/UKIP gallery which they fall back on far too often.

They'll be accusing the councils of engaging in a culture war next. This seems to be their current tactic, anything they don't like is part of a culture war.

I've just read they are doing away with unconscious bias training and have described it as being associated with culture war. Helping people understand everyday discrimination is now seen as part of a culture war. There are issues with unconscious bias training and often it is too tokenistic but the reasoning seems to suggest that they see it as a war on the right of the good old British people to not be challenged on their discriminatory views.

I suppose there'd be nothing stopping teachers in the affected areas from all getting 'sick' and being unable to work until after Christmas, thus forcing the schools to close owing to lack of staff.

Nothing the local authorities could do about that.

That power has been with the schools and local authorities the whole time. We nearly closed our school just before the half term break and would have been in our right to do so. This action is the same

until the government tells you might think you have the right to close your school, but we will see you in court

How does that even work and wtf is wrong with them?

There's only a few days left anyway and if school heads/governors feel it's in the right interest for everyone, then what the hell does it matter?

What are they hoping to achieve in a court, fine already cash-strapped schools directly?

Not one to defend the govt, but they are not taking or threatening schools with court. It is the council who wanted to close all schools in the council area that was threatened with court.

Although as I understand it, they weren't even closing schools, merely looking to go online for the last few days. Which would be inline with what Unis and most employers have been doing.

No, my apologies, not paying attention am I?

Can I rephrase it and replace schools with local councils but include the complaining and implied swearing?

You can :-)

Wtf are they doing? Fiik. God awful optics I think is the phrase.

I suspect it is in part a power play against local Lab politicians, having been shown up by Andy Burnham, they are not keen for Sadiq Khan to lead them up a similar path.

I think you are correct.

Immature stamping of authority and all that.
