The thing that confuses me with this one, I’m hoping someone can fill in the detail…

We used that design from 1981-84 in the blue home and white away kit, with Pioneer as sponsors. We then changed to the France style red band and 3 horizontal white bands from 84-86 (84/85 still with pioneer, and then 85/86 with Radio Orwell.
When did we actually use this orange pinstripe shirt, given that it was the previous shirt design, but has Radio Orwell as sponsor - did we revert to that design for a 3rd shirt during 85/86 because the red band that was on both the home and away shirts wouldn’t work on the orange?

Or did we actually use it during the 81-84 period, but with radio Orwell as sponsors for it - as it still has the “UEFA CUP WINNERS” below the badge.

A sponsorless version of the kit was used away to Luton (FA Cup 4th round 1982), Buther got a blooded nose and ended up in hospital.

I assume it was always held over from season to season as 3rd choice, in the event that we played someone in blue/white stripes/half/hoops. Not sure it ever got used more than a handful of times over that period. Not only that we had a red/black striped shirt that had the Pioneer sponsor during 84/85 season, but must have gone back to the pinstripe version when Radio Orwell took over sponsorship.

Thank you for filling in some gaps. Still a bit of an oddity I guess!

Burleys, shirt from the Luton game ( a shirt with 2 on it anyway) was on ebay a while back. It stated that it was used, then branded with Radio Orwell later on. No throw away culture back then!

Yes, the original had 10 pin stripes from armpit to armpit with one either side of the v neck… whereas this Copas one only has about 6, with one centrally aligned from the v neck.

This shirt is a fake. By the time Radio Orwell sponsored us the kit was thick red and black stripes, which was a great kit also. Pioneer was the sponsor for this work of art.

As for the Copa reproduction, it is a let down. As mentioned the black stripes are too far apart and no three stripes.

The Copa shirts for Punch and Umbro are very good. For adidas not so good.

I'd like Town to get Copa to make the 1997-99 white sleeves shirt and 2003-05 kit, both of which were top class work.

In an idea world Adidas would produce a limited number of this shirt in its ‘original’ glory.

Can’t cost too much for them to actually do this.

You'd think they would be keen to do this as the money they'd make would be huge. No idea why they don't.

The Punch 2000 one is very accurate, as is the cream and black one - I don't have them but they are very nicely done

I've also got the 78 cup final one, that's an excellent quality shirt, it misses the trefoil but you simply can't get replica shirts from that era.

They are really good quality shirts, a great partnership

The cream abd black one looks good until you actually buy it. The material on the original was quick thick, good quality. The remake feels cheap and is nothing like the original.

Also, the cream colour is not right on the Copa shirt, too yellowy and not true to the original.

Agree about the 2000 remake, it is very good. But you need a size up from normal and it is a tight fit around the arms.

This was Town's third kit from 1984-86, red and black. One of the best.

The other kit was worn rarely between 1982-84.

This is a good guide to Town's shirt history. The club used to sell something similar on a poster:

Not so, we wore the pinstriped version in 85 with Radio Orwell sponsorship away to QPR I believe -

No problem. I can only assume that it had still been knocking around the kit room without a sponsor. Don't forget the TV companies had banned shirt sponsors for any televised matches, although this was relaxed in 83/84.

As you said, it had hardly been used between 81-84, presumably the kitman though he'd make use of it one last time and stick Radio Orwell on it.

The 86-87 season saw us with new kit design and sponsors anyway.

Also brought back memories of Mark Brennan. Thought he was a cracking player and he should have made more of his career than he did, although it was still decent. England U-21, played in Top division with Man City, Boro and Oldham.

The last I heard of him he was playing for Dagenham & Redbridge around 2001.
