Not saying they aren't down (by 87 vs last week), but the doctors and nurses working in the hospitals are still saying they are very concerned. How many of the near 7,000 people in hospital with Covid would be there anyway? That's what is putting too much stress on the NHS. "And there are just under 2000 less people in Hospital with covid than there was at the middle of last month." - 1,000 people die every week, so i'm sure hospitalisations have gone down. Not maybe for the reason we'd like. And those 7,000 take up much more resources, much more time and require a different approach to treatment. It's amazing how the pandemic has gone that has made some see that these numbers are 'good'. Especially when 'good' is over twice the hospital admission rate than any other country in Europe [Post edited 8 Oct 2021 13:27]

No one is saying these numbers are good. But they are nowhere near where we were at the peak and aren't showing any signs of getting out of control. I can't abide covid deniers ands lockdown sceptics. I'm equally pissed off at scaremongering.

It's not scaremongering. It is those working in the health service saying things are in a dire state and they need more help, both in terms of caution from the public and help from the Government. The fact they are not what they were at the peak in January when the NHS was on it's knees is not a 'defence'. And the comparisons to Europe can't be ignored either for hospitalisations. Why are we so high in comparison?

I asked Rory why we are so high in another thread. Her answer was to blame the government and relaxing the restrictions too quickly and not making asks mandatory. I then pointed out that Wales has taken a different approach than Westminster, has a different government and mask wearing is mandatory yet they continue to have the highest number of cases per 100,000. I also pointed out that Scotland didn't relax restrictions until a full month after England, has mask wearing as mandatory and a different government and approach to covid. Up until a couple of weeks ago Scotland was the Covid capital of Europe. So you tell me.

Another 40,000 covid cases today on 11:37 - Oct 8 by BlueBadger | But the problem is, we are struggling with beds, staff and burnout RIGHT NOW. I fear there isn't any slack in the system AT ALL to cope with any amount of 'surge', regardless of how small it is compared to previously. |
Yep, i agree, everything is so stretched that we are running on goodwill and with winter coming and a potential bumper flu season it's going to be a rocky road ahead. I am just grateful that a large swath of the adult population is now jabbed or double jabbed. Will certainly help.

I suppose I'm not as hard as those people that don't wear masks when they could?

It was a genuine question, but we are clearly doing something wrong or we are just more unhealthy to see more end up in hospital. Or it could be chronic GP shortages which see more people end up in hospital to begin with. The problem is we do have those people in hospital and their presence takes up more resources than a ‘regular’ patient. So we should be doing all we can to reduce infections. Unfortunately much of Europe is now way ahead of us on vaccination, having moved onto younger folk whilst we prevaricated on it. Might well have something to do with the rates.

The best deaths though. British deaths innit. This whole herd immunity experiment is a bit vicious isn't it. OK yes we have a reasonable percentage of the population fully vaxxed, but not enough to achieve herd immunity. So they are back to trying to achieve herd immunity through infection; I can't see how it can be anything else. I know it's been hard on people, but you'd think they'd still focus on messaging and action to reduce transmissions in the community, especially amongst the younger age groups. You probably only need light touch interventions at this stage. We're not talking full lockdowns or anything. Just reinforcing social distancing and mask wearing in public spaces would help, but that all seems to have gone by the by now.

Excuse me, if by "Rory" you mean me, I pointed out via a linked stats chart that we're currently worst in Europe by a country mile. You asked me why that was so & I replied that 1. I didn't know why you were asking me as I'm not an expert and there are others far more qualified on here than me to answer 2. That you cannot ignore removal of masking/distancing requirements, and also could not rely on individuals to stick to m & d voluntarily. 3. I agreed with you re other countries vaxxing 12-17 yr olds as a factor. I now have neighbours on both sides who've tested positive, incl 2 kids today & earlier in week who are just into double figures in age. In a rural village of around 100 people.

My golf mate who is in his early 50s, double vaccinated, has had two spells in hospital with oxygen levels critical. He’s out now and is sort of recovering thank goodness. It’s a really awful virus so be careful out there ITFCers! So in summary Tub of Lard’s Covid achievements: One of the highest infection rates in Europe One of the highest death rates in Europe - let the bodies pile high, eh Boris. One of the lower vaccination rates in Europe (funny how it’s gone quiet on that, eh Boris? Millions hosed up the wall on a track and trace system because the govt gave out a contract for it to be managed centrally rather than managed through local authorities. Hospitals overflowing. No face to face GP services and the devils own job get serious stuff attended to (my dad’s undergoing tests at the moment so I know how it is) Add in: A wrecked economy. No petrol (zippo in the South East - went to five different stations this morning - all empty) Emptying supermarket shelves. I’m surprised the tories held a party conference. A funeral would have been more appropriate. Yet these boneheads are still ahead in the polls. You couldn’t make it up. Still, three points today - hurrah!

Firstly, I’m not a Labour Councillor. I’ve been too close to politicians to ever go near that. Secondly, I managed to get some petrol on Wednesday at 6am. Thirdly, if you like what’s happening with the supply chain struggling week on week, great. Fourth, I didn’t vote for Brexit and everything I’ve seen in the last five years, which may or may not be more than you, has not changed my mind. Finally, if you do not like my opinions, that’s great. That’s what the forum is about. But to call me a liar - or anyone, without evidence?
