Try to to tell me tha that there's a better album recorded in the 90's than 'Maxinequaye' by Tricky and I'll tell you why you're wrong. Possibly without swearing.

If I had a pound for every joint I've smoked listening to that album I'd be richer than Elon Musk. That whole Bristol scene at the time was amazing. This is a really good book that I've had for years that's worth a read

Made the OP on the back of the Pitchfork review. Pitchfork are TERRIBLE at contemporary reviews but brilliant on retro reviews. As you say, astonishing to think that so many genuinely innovative inventive musicians came out of Bristol in such a short space of time.

Not really my bag, so my favourite 90s album would be “Ten” by Pearl Jam. The 90s was a great decade for music!

PS I’m not drunk, just can’t sleep so listening to a bit of Tricky as I write this

Likewise - the Bristol scene wasn't my choice - but the 90s was a golden era of alternative music if you set aside the BritPop rubbish. Couldn't pick a favourite, but

The decade started with The Orbs Adventures Beyond Ultraworld and finished with Agaetis Byrjun by Sigur Ros - two albums that still get regular rotation when I'm working.

Also on regular rotation are other gems such as Elizium by Fields of the Nephilim (probably the best goth album of all time IMO), Aenima by Tool and Young Team by Mogwai.

Also some great music from mainstream artists like New Adventures by REM, Wish by The Cure and Violator by Depeche Mode.

I take your Tricky and raise you Paul Weller's debut LP from 92. A thing of absolute beauty.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

We’re on the same page my friend. Ten and Dirt both superb. I’d also add Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins and Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth too.

And that’s not to mention The Pixies or Radiohead.

In my humble opinion music peaked in the early nineties!

Meh. Weller has made no interesting music whatsoever after 1990.

Largely thanks to the Dug Out. Possibly the finest night club ever.

The Wild Bunch, who later became Massive Attack were amongst the DJs.

It was so unbelievably cool. Still love the music.

Gosh I’d forgotten about The Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead. The Bends is a masterpiece!

I should also add Badmotorfinger by Soundgarden to the list!

"Possibly the finest night club ever."

Surely has to be The Wigan Casino and I never even went there.

Why?

All those very uncool people in their silly clothes? (And I love a lot of Northern Soul music)

No, because of the music discovered and the pure energy, without flashing lights and glow sticks.

Well the Dug Out was quite different, all about the vibe, cool music and a vague frisson of being on the edge.

So let's just say that they were very different, and that's why I said 'possibly'

Came along to give Smashing Pumpkins a shout and Radiohead also very worthy.
