Quick match and player thoughts 17:23 - Oct 28 with 3021 views | unstableblue | Plymouth put on probably the best opposition display we’ve faced Very good defensive line and real pace and movement going forward, good shape. Whittaker is a quality player. Miller was excellent against Hutchison, amazed he was subbed. We were rusty and a little loose at times. Broadhead was well marked and patchy (live with it people, live with it - he’s our best player most of the time, but gets overrun sometimes). Playing Edmundson was a master stroke from McKenna, he was excellent against the running of Plymouth. He was absolutely blown at the end - what a shift. But he had real wobbles at times. Morsy grew into the game, excellent second half. They were targeting him a little to get a rise from him. Luongo’s yellow card was quite a rash challenge. I think we just deserved the win, I didn’t see their big penalty shout - they were incensed. Hirst some great great work and so pleased he got the goal. Williams had great moments… but how he got MOTM over match saving Hladky is beyond me. Our keeper was sensational today. Thought subs did well, best we’ve had from Scarlett, Harness wobbled initially but then did very good things including a goal. Taylor did one or two great passes. Overall we can play better, but we still got three points against a very good and fired up Plymouth. He’s a good manager, no doubt. Now to Fulham. [Post edited 28 Oct 2023 17:45]

Quick match and player thoughts on 17:30 - Oct 28 with 2866 views | BigCommon | Thought they set up like Port Vale did against us last season. But they had much better quality on the counter.. The fact that our stand out performers were a defender and our keeper, tells you how well they stifled our attacking players..
Quick match and player thoughts on 17:46 - Oct 28 with 2743 views | Vegtablue | Weird game! After the first 60 I thought we'd enjoyed the sizeable lion's share honestly. Plymouth were slick and Whittaker brilliant but it was an attacking onslaught by us for most of that period. The Argyle summary would be, yes Ipswich were better but the Edmundson decision (red and penalty or just outside or dive?) changed everything. From 60 onwards we rather collapsed though. No control in the middle or anywhere really and Plymouth were winning the basketball exchanges. Hladky kept us ahead with multiple saves, one or two brilliant. Then we get the third goal and another of their players breaks down to leave them with 10 men, but like in the Sunderland match we were still unable to exert any authority on the match and they made us look ragged. Thankfully Harness took a grip in the last 3 minutes and we saw it out, but on the balance of chances that could have been a loss even ignoring the Edmundson tackle - something that looked a million miles away on the hour mark. But it wasn't! And our will to win is undeniable.
Quick match and player thoughts on 17:51 - Oct 28 with 2679 views | BloomBlue | Disagree slightly. We had a similar issues against Sunderland & Bristol City, when the opposition put Morsy and Luongo under pressure they cannot get the ball out wide quickly enough which results in the ball staying in the middle. When you play with 2 number 10s they need the ball quickly. Credit to Plymouth for targeting our central midfield and stopping us playing. In those situations you need to try something different, which we did with the 2nd goal, a quick longer ball. CM opened up as the game progressed (and after our 2nd goal) as Plymouth had to take more risks. In these games you need a CM who can spread the ball a bit quicker. However to get 6 points from 2 games where we've not been fluid is credit to the players for continuing to battle.

Thought we saw the 6mins injury time out quite effectively We’ve learnt some lessons. As at 3-2 and with their tales up, I was concerned.

I thought their goal was in injury time tbh but could have my timings wrong. We definitely switched on in the last few.

Yes you’re right it was 90+1 But for the last 5mins we did seem to get more solid and there was good work out on our right wing, keeping the ball out of dangerous areas and not really in play!

Quick match and player thoughts on 23:53 - Oct 28 with 2241 views | FrimleyBlue | Am I the only one who wished Burgess played? I didn't really agree with the commentators that he hardly put a foot wrong.. he had a hand in their first. Got found out a few times with the ball.. possibly could have been sent off after his own mistake etc etc. I applaud KM for not being afraid to make tactical changes.. but is a cb a sensible choice when he's barely playing any football? Also.. if we are to maintain this williams as rb slot. KMs got to work with him on how he really has to cover hutchinson if we go on a counter. Many time today hutch was played through by Chaplin. Williams bombing forward.. but this left a gaping gap in behind which plymouth exploited alot. Scarlett.. I don't see what you saw personally. He's a bit of a wasted sub imo. ( at the moment )

He was definitely at fault for their goal by allowing Whittaker inside, called goal before he even hit the ball once he was given the opportunity to do that. However, this came from a counter, and all our players were completely out of position. I thought all other aspects of GE's game were very good. For me, Hutchinson was really, really poor, and it highlighted how much we missed Burns who gives defensive stability as well as a real threat going forward. I imagine the cbs were also fuming at those short corners. I agree they exploited the space between the full backs and cbs, but it was both sides, i think we should have gone with a 3 at the back to combat this.

This. How are we going to cope when teams finally stop mistakenly setting up to counter Sheeran in the middle? Thankfully opposition managers and their teams of analysts havent found that every single competitive game we play is available to study by interwebz or ticket entry..

Oooh Frimmers, Have to disagree a little Yes there were headline moments where the Fridge struggled, ‘penalty’ incident, Whittaker goal. But I had a good view of him second half… and he had some really BIG moments. And protected our goal and the left hand side of the box very well. On Scarlett I’ve been one of his critics, haven’t seen enough in his cameos. But yesterday he out a real shift in, was closing and hassling much much better. And he also did some good stuff on the ball.

I just find with fridge he's always off balance. There was another one yesterday where we actually got the freekick which I didn't feel it was but it was identical to the issue he had v reading away.. he just leans into players to easily. That's not to say he didn't so some things well. Some excellent shielding of the ball at times.. but I prefer the improver Burgess over george by a mile now. Scarlett. I just dunno. I was buzzing we signed him. I just don't see his value yet. Think A lee summed it up when he said scarlett kept dropping to deep and didn't give us the outlet we had with hirst.

Scarlett was moved to one of the Number 10 positions when Clarke came on on the right wing and it was Jackson that moved to the central striker role. So for two-thirds of his 20 minutes he was meant to drop deep. Pity that we didn’t do better as a team during that period especially against 10 men but we didn’t. So I’m still yet to see Scarlett play when the rest of the team is on the front foot, never mind that he’s only getting minutes at the end of games.

That explains that. I thought jeez scarlett move up lol. I hadn't noticed the Jackson move being honest I just assumed he was running out of position lol. That's an interesting on to see with a ladapo or hirst uptop. I did say last week I think scarlett would suit us more as a 10. Such a shame he's cup tied.
