Is Matt Hancock thick? 14:53 - Sep 24 with 12860 views | The_Romford_Blue | Why on earth would he rule out the ridiculous idea that students could be banned from returning home for Christmas. As if any government, even the Tories, would dare ask millions of students to stay the other side of the country and not see their families on Christmas Day. And as if any student would listen and stay at university, some of which will be first year students in halls - potentially very lonely. So why on earth would he not rule it out? All he’s done by that is scare some students. Already seen two people message in group chats this morning about the horrible idea of being stuck at university for Christmas. It’s just absolute nonsense. I can’t work out what would g through his head to even put the idea into the minds of the public by not ruling it out. Absolute tit. Sorry for yet another bloody rant.

The same way Whitty and the other one used the worst case scenario to scare people. It's not a conspiracy. It's because people need to hear the worst possible outcomes to adhere to the current restrictions. I understand your anger. You've been screwed. It sucks. So has everyone else in the world. If I was you I would book a test a couple of days before you want to go home. Then stay in your room with your bags packed until you get the negative result confirmed. For your family's protection and for peace of mind. There's a lot of water to go under the bridge between now and December. Try not to let it get you down. I'm sure you'll be with your family on Christmas Day.

Of course how he would intend to get home also needs to be factored in to this plan.

He would need to drive or be picked up. Or he could return to Ipswich, get a test if possible, stay in a hotel for 24-48 hours in his room and return home once he's been confirmed negative. Not idea solutions but better than nothing.

Is Matt Hancock thick? on 16:12 - Sep 24 by SpruceMoose | Again we see the failure to put yourself in the mind of someone else and extend them some empathy. Everything, absolutely everything for you seems to be framed through the lens of 'how would this impact me?'. It doesn't matter if it seems ridiculous to you. If someone tells you they are struggling with something you should respect that. |
Utter rubbish. I can empathise as I have stated I missed many a christmas in my 20's. Why don't you stick to the OP rather than crashing the thread with mindless rantings at myself. Any student with empathy and care for their family would stay away.
| Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me.
Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing.
Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial.
Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid.
Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

Assume that was in the military? While I am genuinely extremely grateful to anyone serving our country and missing time with their own families whether they are soldiers, police, NHS staff, firefighters, care home staff or many others; I assume you knew what you were signing up for and it's a bit different to a young person at uni expecting to be able to return home for holidays?

Unusually I'm siding a bit with Hampstead here. In as much as several of these type of threads seem to allude to most uni students as kiddies or something. Many are 20 years old+ so are hardly children. These are adults and it is true that there are people younger battling in war zones around the world, plenty of whom didn't sign up. I reckon I worked 10 Xmases in a row and see every year youngsters who work all of Xmas with rare contact with families. It's not ideal and I also take on board the concerns of mental health of those who do struggle and hopefully needs will be met, but perspective is necessary too. Romford has posted a few times since his return about wanting to be able to do as he likes as he isn't in an at-risk group; well it turns out there are consequences after all. Only the vulnerable should keep themselves locked away and be forgotten. Well maybe others will reconsider their own responsibilities a bit more if they are also directly affected.

It was which is why I didn't stress it. There is a difference of course. It's a good decision and students ought to understand that sometimes you need to sacrifice small things in life. One christmas away from home is no hardship. Especially as they are staying in good accomodation with all mod cons. Hardly tough! Sorry students but you need to accept this with grace.

You raise some reasonable points. I think Rommers is just lashing out on this site which we all encouraged him to do just days ago to get it out of his system. At the end of the day a large chunk of students aren't going to follow this rule so we need to work out a way they can return home in the safest way possible. It's like a very tame version of people are going to use drugs anyway so we might as well legalise and regulate them. FWIW, I might be a pathetic snowflake*, but I would not work Christmas Day for anything. It's a family day to me. Not interested in working for quadruple time etc. *I know you didn't say this. Not putting words in your mouth.

Most people who work Xmas don't do it through choice bud. I had money concerns and could earn a week's money in a day so it was necessary at the time. It's not a problem, it's the responsible thing to do if possible. *No, I know you aren't contesting that either.

I used to buy christmas duties for the cash. When I left I'd work for the money as well. I've no worry with the young chap having a moment to vent. We should support him and ket him know that we are here. Oh, Jeera, it's Ok. I'm a really nice person.....

I see his point too. I think it depends on the viewpoint you view this from. I'd have loved it - I only spent the minimum expected time at home over Christmas and then cleared off to meet up with Uni mates for at least a week over New Year. The majority would probably be fine with a lockdown. Some student are anxious though, or not enjoying their time at Uni or have mental health issues. For them it could be a big worry. So it's right that we make allowances for different responses. The only other thing I want to say is that if this ends up happening, any University worth their salt will have support mechanisms in place for those who need it. They will all have wellbeing officers already that students can speak to about their worries. I expect that Unis would also respond to such an event and make extra efforts to support students 'stranded' in their university towns.
