Smells you shouldn't like but do. 14:48 - Jul 21 with 5404 views | eastangliaisblue | Had a conversation with a workmate this morning about horrible smells you shouldn't like but do. I happen to like the smell of rotten eggs. What would your smell you like but shouldn't be? Your own farts are not allowed as everyone enjoys their own farts.

+1 for creosote. Love that stuff

Smells you shouldn't like but do. on 17:57 - Jul 21 by Illinoisblue | To expand on this, what are classic Ipswich/Suffolk smells? Sugar beet wafting in from Sproughton The corn or wheat or whatever it was in the Cranfields building at Ipswich docks/waterfront The piss-soaked underground walkways by Willis and the one up by what was George’s Bar roundabout And obviously, the sweet aroma of burgers and hot dogs around Portman Road |
I was born and grew up about 8 miles south of Bury St Edmunds... and when the wind was a particular direction, you could still smell the sugar beet wafting in from the Bury factory.

Smells you shouldn't like but do. on 16:06 - Jul 21 by clive_baker | I don’t think I’ve ever been to speedway. Is it still a thing in Ipswich? I used to love getting stuck behind a moped while driving when you can sit there and enjoy those fumes. Don’t seem to have the same smell nowadays. |
Yep, still going - as everyone in IP4 and IP5 could tell you as still so noisy at Foxhall!

Wasn’t it the barley from the maltings down on the docks? Used to stink. You could smell it way out on the east side of the town is the wind was in the right direction (likewise hearing the horns from the boats on New Years Eve, but that’s obviously not a smell). The beet and the maltings were by far the most pervasive smells. I can’t think of anything else close. Smoke from the gorse fires on the Heath maybe, but not particularly unique. Edit - yep, fermenting barley to make malt for the brewing industry. http://www.ipswichsociety.org.uk/fore-st-facelift/history/meux-maltings/ https://www.ipswich-lettering.co.uk/felawstreet.html [Post edited 21 Jul 2022 20:45]

The smell of beet was like the first sign that Chistmas was just round the corner, at least that's how I remember things before decorations started going up in shops in September. The malt from Ipswich (Pauls?) used to be sent to Catalunya to the San Miguel brewery in Lleida. Can't remember the smell though.

St Matthews as a school age teenager. I'd be there every morning in the holidays at half 8 and do a no nonsense 30 lengths. Great way to start the day.

Getting the Number 11 bus from Northgate to St Matthew's we'd sit on the top deck to get the full stale nicotine smell before hitting the chlorine. At Sidegate Lane the pool was in the same outbuilding as the dining hall. Boiled vegetables and chlorine. TWTD.

The swimming pool at Sidegate definitely smelt better than the food, it was the kitchen that was next to the swimming pool and the good wheeled across to the main hall. You’ve reminded me of the smell and it wasn’t a pleasant memory. [Post edited 22 Jul 2022 7:29]
