Have to admit to being a bit gutted we missed out here, very pleased to get Walton though.

The only Muff in Town.

I’d prefer him to Bakinson, but it wouldn’t feel quite right signing yet another young midfielder.

He seems like the energetic midfielder we want who could be a more Morsy-like player. But the Bakinson signing to be over-kill and yet more stock-piling of midfielders and also not solving the problem of stiffening up the midfield. We have enough midfielders and it’s up to someone like El Mizouni to take his chance.
In two games time, would Matete force his way into the side ahead of Morsy and Evans? Could be just a temporary filler.

Are we able to pay a fee anyway? I know we have the Fraser money, but we might have to balance the books. Throwing money around and buying so many players hasn’t really helped us. Without Bakinson, I would understand it more, though.

Agreed, pleased with Walton. As for Matete, it’s a bit of a shame. I’d be interested why we didn’t pursue him, unless we did and it was simply the case of being elbowed out by a club paying more.

What is interesting to me is that Sunderland signed him without a manager in place. How much of a meltdown would there have been if we’d done that after Cook went (assuming the transfer window was open then)?

On this evidence, Sunderland operate down the ‘Head Coach’ route.

Sounds like us and Sunderland may have agreed a fee but chose them over us for whatever reason.

Probably because he looked at our squad and saw we already had 6 players vying for 2 positions and one of those Morsy is going to be a starter every week (when not suspended).

Poll: Is it now time to sack Paul Cook?
