Here's a daft question 18:57 - Apr 28 with 4723 views

Have you ever had a decent cup of tea from a cafe or other outlet?

What is it about our national drink that makes it so difficult to get it right? I cannot remember a single passable cup from a coffee shop, train station or wherever. They've all been terrible.

Is it a question of science, or is there something more sinister afoot? Penny for your thoughts, TWTD.

Exactly, Herb... but why, and how have we allowed this to happen?

At home I drink probably 8-12 mugs of builders if WHF but won't touch the stuff outside this place.

Bury St Ed market.

Used to be a place in Diss years ago that did a nice pot of tea which the owner would bring out on a silver tray with toasted teacakes.

Boston Tea Party have served me a decent one or two.

Other than that- no. But then most home teabags are pretty bad.

More importantly- anythign herbal or fruit based is not a fecking tea. Enjoy them if you like but when I ask for a tea, I do not expect "apple and blackcurrant" to be proposed by the server as one of hte options.

Anywhere that provides a teapot and hot enough water is normally serviceable, anywhere that mainly sells coffee and puts some lukewarm water in a paper cup normally isn't.

I went to a work meeting in Ireland once, can't remember where but best part of an hour or so from Dublin and they served really good tea there, from a massive metal teapot. That was particularly good as I was really hungover.

I think what the tea is served in (and how it is served) is almost as important as the ingredients. Even the best tea is going to suffer if it is in a paper cup.

There was a cafe in Covent Garden, Neal Street, which is the only place I've ever been which made fantastic tea. It was run by a Christian Charity with volunteer workers, was dirt cheap and the food was also top notch. For £5 you could get a pot of tea and a huge panini.

Sadly it closed down three years ago. Cafe Eterno was it's name.

Sales of hot drinks should be banned.

Bloody pretentious twits ordering obscure coffee / milk combinations from a machine where the operative has to twist and turn more knobs and create more steam than a steam engine.

Just means that everyone else has to queue to buy an already made sandwich and can of pop.... so their 10 second transaction has to wait behind a five minute per cup faff some brown crap.

Oddly I have had some pretty good cups of tea at music festivals.

But then a lot of the tea/coffee places at the festivals I attend are more like boutique coffee shops!

See, I’m not fussy with my tea so will get it from anywhere I can although I find that the places that let you take the tea bag out and put your milk in yourself it always tastes better but I’m paying for someone to make it for me at the end of the day!

Why on earth would you buy a cup of tea from anywhere? The markup has got to be pretty enormous if you're paying anything more than about 10p.
