Holidays are the same price but found the lessons and ski pass in Bulgaria to be about £500 less for both of us.

This will be our first ski trip in Europe, is there really much difference between Bulgaria and Austria?

Couldn't agree with this any more. I've skied all over the world and Austria is really hard to beat. Cheap beers, great value, solid snow record, not much queuing on lifts, chocolate box towns and villages. Done Austria maybe 5/6 times.

Your saving money but Austria is the real deal. Schladming is a bit of gem, as is Hopfgarten and the larger SkiWelt. Avoid Kitz and Mayrhofen, they are both a bit glitzy and don't really represent Austria on the whole.

Your lift pass might be £150 cheaper in Bulgaria but you'll get hundreds of kilometres more skiing in Austria. https://skimap.skiwelt.at/?Lang=en

I third this. Go pretty much yearly to Flachau, and still havent explored anywhere near the whole Ski Amade ski area!

Niederau is perfect for beginners and families that would be a great choice.

Ski Amade is great. Take a look here for some good information on the resorts

I did my first-ever ski week in Niederau, in 1987. Been one week every year since, to loads of places. So be careful, if you catch the bug as I did there, it is a lifelong expensive hobby! You do not need big challenging ski areas for a first time, and Niederau fits the bill well.
For an inexpensive, snowsure, and slightly-more-of-a-party place, Sestriere in Italy is perfect for beginners. Book via airbnb or booking.com into the Olympic Village apts which are right on the slopes.

I went there in about 1969/70 on a school skiing trip.

Martin Winter broke his leg with a crack that echoed round the valleys.

I've never skied since.
