Mysterious Missing Managers 14:02 - Sep 2 with 5192 viewsArnoldMoorhen

All this talk of managers got me thinking about managers of the past who seemed to be doing, or have done, a good job, then they seemingly disappeared and weren't considered again.

I mean, I could Google, but it might take an age to find out, and the TWTD hive mind might know, why on earth weren't the following offered jobs? Or did they choose to retire?

I'll start with:

David O'Leary

Brian Little

Alan Curbishley

Gus Poyet and Treacle of course. Seems a long time since people on here wanted him. I haven't heard anything about them for years after their golden boys status at Brighton.

Phil Brown

Twelve years ago he had Hull tearing up the Premiership but he lost the golden touch and managed a succession of clubs, usually in the league below the previous one and with less success. Managed little more than a year as manager of an Indian Super League side and has been unemployed for the last seven months:

Off the top of my head I thought they were managing Bordeaux?

Similar with AVB, he was at Marseilles before lock down.

John Gregory. Paul Jewell.

John Gregory is such a nice bloke.

He had Villa top of the Premiership as it was then half way through the 1998 -1999 season. His managerial career since then really is an absolute car crash, with a string of rogue clubs.

Pochettino's not gone anywhere since leaving Spurs nearly a year ago.

Surely there's some sentimentality for AVB, having interned here as a teenager?

John Gregory. Paul Jewell.

...Richie Wellens (ex ITFC) is the manager there.

Noel Hunt (ex ITFC) is assistant manager.

They've done well as a team.

AVB is still at Marseilles, so doubt we’d be anywhere near his thoughts.

Just seen Poyet was only at Bordeaux in 2018.

To be fair, Oleary probably spent as much as anyone else during that period. So top 5 was not above expectations.

I seem to recall from Ridsdale’s autobiography that he effectively had a free hand and left the club with some pretty interesting contracts to honour when it all came crashing down.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

I remember when Billy Davies and Iain Dowie were being properly talked up in the mid 2000s... That went well.

It was Ridsdale who talked up Seth Johnson's contract negotiations to £37,000 a week.

Allegedly.

Oh yes, along with the Lee Sharpe negotiation which was astonishing - as told by Martin Edwards.

Not quite the same level and he is back now but Andre Villas -Boas? Seemed to ride off this wave of being Mourinho Mk II and got both the Chelsea and Tottenham jobs with no really credentials?

Another amusing one was Avram Grant - how or why he got both the Chelsea and West Ham jobs - wow!

He is now at Marseille and they seemed to have picked up since his arrival last year.

John Gregory is the uncle of a mate of mine. My mate's party trick is that he can stuff a dozen pound coins in his foreskin, it's quite a good money maker for him. I've no idea if John Gregory has a similarly elastic foreskin.

it always used to be the case that the majority of players who left us in the 'glory years' of the mid/late 70's - early 80's never did a huge amount elsewhere (or at least not exceed what they did here with one or two exceptions - Jonno/Muhren) but since Bobby in terms of managers they've all been pretty dire as well since leaving haven't they? Apart from MM who went on to take Gibraltar apart of course.

As is often the case in other walks football management success seems to follow the Bard's dictum that there is a tide in the affairs of men. Alf and Bobby went from us on the flow tide while even George left us on the ebb - perfectly pictured on that wet Tuesday night at Grimsby.

Very few managers seem to rediscover a lost knack. It's a bit like what Powell said about political careers - that, ultimately, they all end in failure.

A dozen pound coins! I must say I’ve never tried it but I can’t imagine that’s easily done. Certainly puts a different meaning to the phrase ‘coming into money’.

I think I’m right in saying John Gregory grew up in St Neots are, so that makes sense that he has family around there. I met him a few times, really good bloke.

It was a trick that made him a few quid on a Friday night as he'd scrounge a pound off people in the pub for an unspecified party trick, upon completion most people didn't want their golden nugget back.

You're correct about John Gregory being a St. Neots lad, his old man was manager of the football club in the 60's, which is well before my time.

Villas-Boas is now manager of Marseille, and actually had a higher win % at Tottenham than Pochettino...
