Greene King 18:44 - Oct 31 with 2385 views | BlueBlueBluex2 | Never thought I would say it as I’m normally very anti Greene King, due to its unimaginative offerings and naff pubs. However, just discovered Abbott and it’s blooming well lovely and ideal for these cold nights. Can’t think of anything Adnams offer which is similar apart from perhaps Broadside which is not a patch.

They try to make too much. Back in the days of wooden casks, kept by Old Uncle Factual in his Bury St Edmunds pub, it was mighty fine stuff. Their worst crime is ruining Old Speckled Hen.

Not as any refutation of your point or wotevs, but in my yoof I was drinking with some American airmen (not a euphemism). Anyhoo, they'd been up all night in the hotel bar and declared how much they disliked the local Speckled Cock. I didn't comment further.

Not sure I believe this story, Americans can't drink.

I'm having a few Ghost Ship this evening. Seemed the most appropriate.

This is true. Afterwards we went to watch Borat at the cinema. Not sure they understood that either.

In my younger days, I used to like GK beers and seem to recall that they had a better reputation than nowadays. Not sure if they've got worse or if the competition has got better.

Used to drink Abbot in the White Horse late 70s. It was once a great beer, as was XX Mild.
Greene King on 20:23 - Oct 31 with 1737 views | boom_boom_boom | Adnams is a lot better than GK. Winter time: Gunhill, Oyster stout, Broadside or Old ale! Summer time: Ghost ship or Lighthouse. GK XX mild is nice.

GK's Speckled Hen uses, for want of a better word, adulterated water. That's to say they add God knows which chemicals to the brewery's spring water to replicate the water used for the Oxford-brewed Speckled.

weirdly one of the few GK beers I actively dislike. but I will never understand why they dont rebadge a few beers to sell at the ground, it seems such simple marketing

as does every modern brewery in the country and actually most have been doing it for nearly as long as Burton made beers were discovered to have such qualities, so I suspect its just amineral mix to make it more like Burton water, a process called Burtonisation, than replicating the Oxfordshire water, as no doubt Morland were doing the same. the taste has changed more likely because they brew with slightly different sourced ingredients in malts and hops, and a slightly different OG/ABV they aim for. I dont know if they still use the original Morland brewery yeast, use their own GK version or just a standard neutral one, all of those can impact it
Greene King on 21:42 - Oct 31 with 1472 views | Guthrum | They did something to Abbot several years ago. Doesn't agree with me any more (and I consumed a lot of it in my youth, notably in The Bushel, in BSE).

Mid-eighties for me drinking the same. Not many options for Abbot Ale in those days - Crown and Anchor was one of the few others.

Oh, Jesus Christ. I remember the Christmas they introduced that. It did things to seasoned, old-skool, farm boy drinkers that caused more damage than the '53 floods.

Abbot ale mixed with a bottle of St Edmunds back in the day was named locally as brain damage, and it was.
