There’s a ton of money sloshing around b/millionaire circles, so NFTs provide a useful receptacle for hugely speculative gambles. There’s also a rather pathetic social thing that footballers seem interested in as well — the Mutant Ape Yacht Club that they mainly grift for is a slightly less “exclusive” offshoot of the Bored Ape Yacht Club.

What a world we live in…

I think it’s also a case of them just jumping thoughtlessly on a trendy bandwagon when they see another player doing it.

It’s fÅ«cking terrible, of course, and will only serve to screw over the poor sods at the bottom of the pyramid scheme — John Terry, TAA, Wilshere etc. will probably make a bit, and can afford to lose their punt anyway.

It should be cracked down on by the government as it’s a Ponzi scheme in the purest sense, but Sunak seems quite a fan of “crypto”.
