Generally not. Of the 'aristocrats and gentry', most are relatively new creations (within the last three to four hundred years). The Dukes of Buccleuch are essentially a branch of the Royal Family. King James I invented the title of baronet (a hereditary knighthood) as a way of extorting money from the wealthier farmers (they were given the title, whether they wanted it or not, then had to pay a large fee for privilege).
Much of the old Norman aristocracy had been wiped out in the various Barons Wars, civil wars and royal purges during the 11th to 15th centuries, culminating in the Wars of the roses and Henry VIII's habit of executing anybody who might have the slightest claim to the throne. |  |
