Have to say a bit concerned with how the end of the window is looking..... 15:37 - Aug 31 with 15076 viewsitfcjoe

....after chasing George Hirst for months, there's been a fair bit of talk about how Macauley Bonne would be a big downgrade, but now seems serious interest judging from both Phil and the EADT guys in a player with 74 minutes of league football under his belt.

Hopefully by 11pm on Thursday all will have fallen into place - but think it would be hugely risky putting all eggs in the Freddie Ladapo basket as the only number 9 with any proven ability to lead the line in such a pivotal season

If we can improve the squad - then great, more than happy to for us by homer_123 31 Aug 2022 11:16
to do a final deal or two.

But you know what, for the first time in a 'long, long' time - we have a squad that on paper and on the pitch is looking every bit capable of promotion.

If we don't do any business, I really don't think it would be the end of the world - the squad has excellent depth and the way KM has us setup there are goals throughout the squad.

Yes, more than happy if we can improve the squad but if we don't I'm really not too worried.

Genuinely enjoying watching us play.

As good as we are to watch, Joe's right. We're only 1-2 key, long-term injuries away from our promotion ambitions being snookered. We still need support in that number 9 area and potentially another body to compete for one of those 10 slots.

Until I saw TJJ lead the line I was concerned. But he was excellent there against Shrewsbury. Arguably his best performance of the season.

You’re spot on (just seen you post on my jackson thread too)

How we play that number 9 role is key, and if ladapo get crocked we are very short up there

True actually, forgot he played that role.

Looked mature beyond his years up there

I do think it's fairly obvious that things haven't gone to plan and we probably do feel a little short in some places, but... clubs have won this league with far less quality than we have, even without further additions.

If this is it then it's up to the manager to get a tight squad playing at their maximum.

It looks shambolic, but was very similar last year when we seemed to chase Crooks for a long period and then ended up with Carroll instead. Getting another player similar to Ladapo is key so let’s hope we manage it.

I’m hopeful there’s a someone out there who hasn’t been named. Bonne would be an option but I’m not keen on it and neither are Ipswich from what Phil is reporting.

I can’t understand the logic of this young lad from Sheff Utd, hopefully he turns out good but if we’re targeting Hirst on a perm, you would assume there’s a fair chunk of the budget left for a striker considering Hirsts rumoured fee and likely high wages.

Agreed, I'm a bit concerned especially after Chappers and Aluko injuries. However, lots has been made about us having 'multiple targets', so let's wait and see. Over to you, Ashton.

I'm not concerned, yet, but there is no question we need another number 9 option, and in my view I'd want that to be a relatively proven option rather than someone speculative.

Shambolic is a stretch I think. We had Ball, Leigh, Ladapo, TJJ, all in before pre-season. Harness and Davis in before the first match.

That's a lot of problems solved very early on in the Summer. Leaving yourself one player short after all that isn't a shambles.

I think Crooks and Hirst are similar situations, so maybe we do need to get better at knowing when to quite with targets that aren't happening. However, we were signing Crooks as a 10 rather than as a centre midfielder so we ended up signing 6 players for that position anyway!

Morgan rogers had played 14 minutes of senior football before his loan to play off finishing lincoln City in league 1.

This sheff utd youngster, is being watched by Klopp and other prem sides. if he came in and did a job for us, why is it to be snuffed at? it's a low risk potential high reward loan.

If there was a deal to be done for Hirst, it should have been completed 2 weeks ago. Once it became fairly public knowledge that Leicester were offering him a new deal with the intention of a Championship loan, we really should have moved on and wrapped up a deal on another target on the list. Going to the wire for a loan (of a relatively untried youngster it seems) is not what I expected to be honest. Maybe I am being harsh and other targets have fallen through (Mighten for example - but even he is relatively untried).

Yeah, I said when we signed Ladapo he’s a good signing but I hope he wasn’t going to be the star No9 who led the line for us every single week. We can’t pin all our hopes on him and we’re 1 injury away from being extremely short in that area.

I know we play a different brand of football to the teams who went up last year but they all had strikers who just popped up and got them out of trouble when it mattered. Harness looks like he could be that for us but he’s been historically quite streaky.

Our squad is very close to being complete and I wouldn’t be devastated if we didn’t add anyone to it, but do feel we need just that little bit more.

First loans are a big old dice roll and we've clearly been recruiting for something a bit more proven all Summer.

I think it'd be a low risk move to keep us covered until January but it certainly isn't ideal.

Not saying we haven't but I hope we have another high profile waiting in the wings time will tell, but chasing hirst this long was not the right thing to do, if he wanted to be here he would have been here a few weeks ago,

But it's being treated like it's the only thing we're trying to do.

It could be Bonne plus this loanee. It could be Bonne, Loanee, Mata and Matete.

Or it could be no one and we trust those in the squad at present, which has seen as joint top unbeaten going into september. Least we haven't sold walton and brought in holy as a replacement.

I thought TJJ looked really good there, but fact he's gone back to 10 role both on Saturday and last night seems to suggest he's not seen as a player to do that or seen as more valuable elsewhere (coupled with the Hirst chase)
