The 22 Clubs that have been in the Premier League and dropped into the 3rd tier. 01:56 - Feb 11 with 1845 views | StowTractorBoy | It is a frightening read if you take your football and especially Ipswich Town seriously, that far bigger Clubs than us have dropped like a stone from the heady heights of the Premier League into the third tier of English football. The Clubs are as follows:- Barnsley, Blackburn, Blackpool, Bolton, Bradford City, Charlton, Coventry, Leeds, Leicester, Manchester City, Norwich, Nottingham Forest, Oldham, Portsmouth, QPR, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Southampton, Sunderland, Swindon, Wigan and Wolves. Nine of the aforementioned Clubs are still playing in the third tier or below. Nine Clubs have managed to still be in the Championship and only 4 Clubs of the 22 listed are in the Premiership now, being Leicester, Manchester City, Southampton and Wolves. There have of course been some up and downs for some of the above Clubs for instance Coventry who dropped to the 4th tier but are now in Division One. Sadly it looks as though Ipswich will be number 23 to drop into the third tier having played in the Premiership.

I'm afraid expecting an immediate bounce back is quite naive. - Southampton took two seasons - Sheff Utd took six seasons - Forest took two years - Leeds took three seasons Sunderland have games in hand but are only 4th at the moment.

Apparently we will be the biggest club in that league and we will bounce back at the first attempt.

We have an owner, who whilst he may not be the richest, isn't a fly by night after a quick buck and will ensure we keep the ship steady until we get back up. Hopefully it is in the first year but if not then so be it. I'm really not worried about the future of the club, things will be ok.

Luton were founded members of the Premiership and have never played a Premiership / Premier League game. Also worth noting that for older fans relegation means only a handful of new grounds.

It was always thus - and always has been. It's not how 'big' the club is, it's how good or bad the team is. Some teams can overreach themselves - Rotherham, Yeovil, Burton etc in this division. Others seemingly underachieve - eg Sunderland for the last 50 years. But the basic truth is that half the league thinks it belongs in the Prem - and there are always upstarts such as Bournemouth and Swansea and WIgan who are capable of 'doing a Rotherham' in the Prem. As Town might be for a year or two at some point in the not so distant future.
