Looks like another great sporting event is getting ruined next week 04:57 - May 24 with 41913 viewsThe_Romford_Blue

1,000 Animal Rising protesters turning up to ruin the Derby at Epsom. Track has applied for an injunction to ban them or they’ll ruin it but even if they get the injunction (unlikely I’d imagine), it’ll be a nightmare stopping them with Epsom’s course layout. Epsom, unlike Aintree, is an open track and getting on to ruin it will not be that difficult unfortunately. It’s part of a public footpath when racing isn’t on to the side of the course so can be accessed if people want to quite easily. They’ve specifically said today in writing and in a meeting with the course that they plan to turn up and ruin both days by sitting on the track.

So that’ll be another sporting event I’m in attendance that these tw*ts ruin. That’s if I even get there with the now added train strike announced conveniently three days ago. Two days off work, train tickets, race day tickets at £140 a pop per day and it’ll probably end up cancelled anyway because it’s 2023 and nothing I like doing goes without someone sitting in the way trying to ruin it.

I doubt TWTD is the place to moan about this though as, like with the Snooker World Championship last month, the racing isn’t something the majority on here enjoy so it’s ok. They’ll no doubt target a town game soon just to really make me despise them. Protest for protest sake. There’s always something someone somewhere disagrees with and will then protest about and attempt to ruin.

What a depressing time to be a human being.

Genuine question, is it mostly jump racing that causes all these deaths?

There are definitely more deaths in jump racing than flat. That is true. The huge majority of horses have long and happy careers without even a single fall though, starting their careers at 4/5 and retirement at 13/14. Should jumps racing be banned, the entire national hunt breeding industry is done. You don’t breed thoroughbred horses for stuff that isn’t racing. And whilst it’s a huge shame when a horse dies, what would be far crueller is ending the industry altogether and all of the other horses who are denied long and happy lives. Thousands a year.

Do you have a link to stats showing that more horses die in fields normalised for the difference in baseline numbers?

I'd also point out those horses don't die in front of thousands of people as part of a spectacle.

Finally, rather than responding twice, I'll respond to your other post here:

I understand you're worried about the possible injury to a horse from running onto the track but then where do you draw the line - are you not worried that forcing a horse to jump over high fences at 40mph is also possibly going to cause injury?

SB

A jumps horse wouldn’t be going at 40mph. Half that.

Davidson chose a flat race, the fastest horses running that day and chose the fastest bit of the track (Tattenham corner famously downhill) to cause the most damage. My issue with her is that she made that decision knowing it was definitely more likely than not that the horse would also be killed.

Horses don’t die in front of thousands at racing usually either. There are screens put up to keep the horse calm. And they also act in stopping the public seeing a horse be injected and euthanised if it comes to that.

I will get you that stat but there’s no way I can find it now. I’ll have to scroll through my twitter from before the grand national to find it and as people know now my twitter has been identified on here without my permission, i tweet a lot about a manner of things every week. But I will endeavour to find it for you tonight. I’m not saying the difference was huge but it was statistically true that more horses as a percentage in their field than they do in racing. And that will almost definitely be down to the treatment of the racehorse being so so so good that they’re the healthiest horses on the planet enjoying special food and kept to their absolute best. Whereas horses in a field may be wild or perhaps may only be looked after by their owners once or twice a day. I will find the stat for you though tonight and when you see the thread tomorrow, you’ll be surprised.

Would be an interesting stat if it's defendable. Presumably it's normalised by age of the horse, as logic says more older horses would die naturally in fields than a 6 year old race horse on a track for example?

Crudely if it's demonstrable that the life expectancy of a horse is greater within the industry than outside of it, then that would be interesting.

Interesting the number has gone up. They apparently (I don’t look at the site as it revels in fatalities) add deaths from previous months/years so it always looks like the number has gone up.

I’ve looked and today only five horses in England and Ireland didn’t complete. All five were pulled up, none of which were killed.

So three horses have no died in the last half hour as is claimed. But that site will have you believe that purely for affect.

Thankyou for the constructive and fair reply. A rarity on this thread from the usual squad.

For what it’s worth, I actually think a peaceful off track protest as they do most years is fine. It’s not for me personally and I just walk by then but that’s a fair democratic right.

Going onto private property, going on the track and ruining the day for 150,000 people who’ve paid for something… that’s not ok.

If it was an Ipswich game these same people on here would be crying their eyes out. But it’s not something they like so it’s ok. Hypocrites

Please don’t speak for me. I would happily sacrifice an ITFC game if the pitch was invaded for animal cruelty reasons.

I’m not saying it’s right but we’re talking 1 in every 500 runners.

In comparison, statistically more horses percentage wise die in a field than these thoroughbreds are in racing. Because of the treatment of the horses.

I completely understand people are anti racint and that’s fine. I don’t go disrupting their protests. My issue is they’re planning en masse to ruin an event for people. They’re purely here to ruin it. That’s where I have an issue.
[Post edited 24 May 2023 16:15]

1 in every 250 was far more than I had imagined. That seems rather high.

I imagine more horses do die in fields statistically, but I would imagine there are massively more horses in fields than there are racing.

I imagine if we were to talk about the rights and wrongs of disruptive protests, we'd probably never come to an agreement.

I’ve just edited it before seeing this.

It’s 0.2 percent which is actually 1 in 500 rather than 250. That’s my mistake

Disruptive protests are hugely irritating to those who suffer the immediate inconvenience, if it's being stuck on the M25 for a couple of hours or having the Derby delayed for 30 minutes. However, they do garner far more media attention for their cause so they're going to continue.

Also, it’s as a percentage? So out of 1000 horses in racing, 2 will die. I think the number in fields was something like 3.4 or 3.3.

And you have to remember that the racehorses in their lives get treated like absolute kings.

If reincarnation is a thing, I’d choose to come back as a racehorse.

Is it 1 in 500 race horses will meet that fate and 499 retire in tact? Or 1 in 500 runners? If it's the latter and a horse runs 50 races in it's career, then it has a 1 in 10 change of dying at the hands of the sport?

So it's okay for anti-horse racing protestors to protest, so long as they don't disrupt the thing they are protesting against? What about anti-hunt protestors? Should they similarly protest against hunting in a way that doesn't disrupt the hunt?

I realise it's as a percentage. The latest figures I could see from a quick google was coming out at 0.24%, so we're in the roughly 1 in 400s range.

It still seems quite high to me personally but everyone would have to draw their own line at what seem safe to them.

I wouldn't want to do something where I've got a 1 in 500 chance of dying.

I don't like those odds much. If the average horse runs 40 races in it's career it has a 1 in 10 chance of dying at the hands of the sport.

Interesting that the rate for flat racing was 0.1% and for jump racing 0.5%. Feels a bit of a no brainer to reform the sport and do away with jump racing.
