Covid later trends in UK 21:01 - Jun 8 with 2671 views | Steve_M | Hospital admissions trending upwards rapidly now, mainly to unvaccinated age groups though. Even if deaths stay low the impact is still negative as exponential growth in cases puts pressure on the NHS. Lots more detail in the thread:

They get sick, quicker albeit with a quick response and recovery with treatment. And, you know, because they're young and are coming from a good functional baseline, they're by default for full escalation of care.

Don't worry, they won't be. Until 3 weeks too late. Again. Fook only knows what we'll do at [redacted] it it kicks off again. We're currently 60- beds down across the Trust due to urgent roof repairs necessitating ward closures and at just over 50% ITU capacity thanks to same. [Post edited 8 Jun 2021 21:27]

Need to know what a ‘functional baseline’ is. Also, are you saying us old ‘uns won’t receive a ‘full escalation of care’ whatever that is? Ta.

Essentially, it's the question 'how well do you do at home when well'. It's not about age, it's about quality of life, physical reserve and ability to self-care. If you're 72 and walking your dog 3 miles a day, driving and generally enjoying yourself, you'll get into ITU still. Hell, I've seen people 15 years older than that get into ITU if they're independent, driving, etc and 50-year olds who are, to put not too fine a point on it, f**cked be declined. Obviously though, I'm not suggesting we take Facters to ITU.

Covid later trends in UK on 21:24 - Jun 8 with 2497 views | Trequartista | The source of the data is the "FT analysis of UK Government Covid-19 dashboard" The UK Government Covid-19 dashboard is currently showing a very small fall in patients being admitted to hospital in the last 7 days (up to June 2). I would probably bet they go up again when the next data is released but how has someone interpreted that as "the latest data now showing a clear rise" ?

I read some of it but the thread was vey long… If nothing else, then a few extra weeks to get more people vaccinated looks like it will make a difference to cases.

Hospital admissions are up by over 5% in a week, starting to push 4 figures again overall.

Sunak is apparently “not against” a 4 week delay. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jun/08/sunak-could-accept-four-week-delay We’re going to see a 2 to 4 week delay with some easing on 21st just to allow Johnson to say the plan isn’t in reverse

Some extra stats: A 2 week delay gets almost 5 million extra 2nd doses done and 2 million 1st doses. That will be the overriding stat that delays things

Will take another 6 weeks, at least, before those not currently vaccinated fully benefit from two jabs. The public are getting mixed messages, especially in areas such NW England where the level of new cases is much much higher. Blackburn for example the 7 day figure is 50 + times higher than Suffolk. Government issue guidelines, Manchester Mayor reminds people the are only guidelines and suggests people make their own decisions, if they have something planned then go ahead. Presumably those not yet vaccinated will be meeting in the pubs. Boris Johnson is the real culprit he still insists we are all in this together, he of course means England when he says we.. What is the point of putting extra resources in if people think it is OK to do whatever they want. It isn't as if a few extra weeks will see the end of the Covid threat it will be back in force sometime this autumn and Lockdowns will again be the order of the day. Tiers didn't work well last time but they need to be made to work.

Thanks. Good to have some further clarification. My wife’s a GP and she said many of the people out clapping last year would be horrified if they knew the ruthless criteria being implemented in hospitals regarding who was deemed worth making the effort to save and who wasn’t. I’d thought she was exaggerating somewhat.

Too late even then. By the time a new variant has been analysed and identified, it's already been spreading for a week or two. During which several cases could have arrived in the country and be infecting people. Long-term sealing of borders is the only effective way to ensure no mutations would ever arrive. Which is not practicable for many reasons (e.g. trade, food supplies). And also does not prevent new variants developing domestically.

Errr.....I walk at least three miles a day, drive, go to the recycling centre and enjoy life thoroughly. But I'm not 72 and don't have a dog. Even more importantly, I don't actually need to go to ITU at the moment.

And even if you did no doubt you would insist on being taken to the barbers to sort out any maladies just like what happened when you were a young man...

I think I am right in saying that the UK let 1.6 mill people into the country during the last lockdown. This from a jingoistic Government whose playbook is “Rule Brittania” and stop Jonny Foreigner coming in to our country and causing all the problems. Two issues that will haunt this Government is the complete lack or controls at our borders and almost complete failure of track and trace. For now, the amazing vaccine programme will buy them time.

Yes, the majority (90%+) were British Citizens or those who live here. And normally that 1.6m figure would be 10x that. We weren't open for large scale tourism. The Government is still incompetent though, just to make that clear.

It’s so hard to shut the borders and keep variants out. Australia is effectively shut off but Melbourne has today just eased lock down after of a suspected case of the Delta variant.
