Perversely, looking forward to the Pizza Cup this season... 08:38 - Aug 23 with 3790 viewsBlueBoots

Chance to get some key players returning from injury up to speed, some minutes into players who we may need to bring off the bench in the league, and some first team experience for a few youngsters. Would be good to progress this year (maybe even - finally - a trip to the new Wembley) - I'd enjoy watching a team like this against Northampton:

----------------- Hladky -----------------
Edmundson - Keogh - Burgess
Agbaje - Ball - Harper - Penney
----- Edwards - Humphreys -----
------------- Jackson -------------

Unlike the League Cup, this one we may actually compete for.

I think it would be a massive anti climax going to Wembley for the Pizza cup.

I would prefer to wait for a Championship play off final or a cup final/semi. Even if that takes another decade or so.

Truly impaired.

Hladky
Keogh - Burgess - Leigh
Edwards - Ball - Humphreys - Penney
Aluko
Ladapo - Jackson

(Working on the assumption our line up v Barnsley will be Walton; Donacien, Woolfenden, Edmundson; Vincent-Young, Morsy, Evans, Davis; Chaplin, Harness; John-Jules. If Burns is fit and plays then KVY can replace Penney on Tuesday)

I don't agree with that.

It's still a cup - and one we haven't won yet. I'd like us to add it to our collection, given we have found ourselves unexpectedly eligible over these four seasons. Might not get a chance again for decades.

Moreover, a trip to Wembley will help get us used to being part of big occasions again. Boost our profile. Let everyone know that Ipswich are on their way back.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

This. It's a trophy that not even Norwich would get the open top bus out for.

They really would.

Three-hour Look Norfolk special, 48-page pull-out, commemorative kit, etc.

Anyway, I’d like to win it. Not at the expense of promotion, of course.

That's a good point actually. We ARE talking about a club who, a few years back, held an open top bus parade to celebrate a side that got knocked out of the FA cup in the semis.

I'd rather go for both, even a Pizza Cup final is going to be a great day out and a chance to do something as an Ipswich fan we haven't done for a generation.

There's only so many trophies to go round, winning one is always a good thing - we can't exactly be fussy having won nothing since 2000

I don't think anyone will be too bothered if we go out of it, and clearly the league is the 1 priority this season, but I don't see the harm in a run if it means getting minutes into squad players. Bit of a tin pot tournament admittedly but Pompy and Sunderland have had a nice day(s) out at Wembley for it in recent years, it would be a decent day out if nothing else.

Yup i'd love a trip to Wembley even if its only this cup and cannot see how winning football matches can be an anti climax . Onwards and upwards .

I would attend and I will be attending the initial home games in the Pizza Cup. I would just prefer our next trip to Wembley was for an A category game.

It's early days in the season and we obviously need to make sure we kep our feet on the ground but it's going to be an expensive spring, what with trips to Wembley for this in April then back a couple of weeks later for the FA cup semis then again for the final. At least winning the league means we won't have to mess about with the playoffs.

I think McKenna will treat the Pizza Cup as an opportunity to get minutes into the squad players & also play some of the kids. His reign here will be determined by whether he gets Town up this season or not so I'm prepared to give him a pass on the Cup games. Anyone considering attending should be well aware of this & not bitch about the team we put out.
And yes, I have found some of Town's team selections in Cup games in the past when we were in mid table somewhat bewildering.

One I'd like to see starting is Tawanda Chirewa. He's doing it for the U21s, we're struggling to persuade him to sign a new contract, he (apparently) reckons he's up to first team football right now. Good moment to assess his development I think.

We have never played at the new Wembley the list is stark

1) us
2) Blackburn
3) Crawley Town
4) Colchester
5) Accrington

I’d very much like to get off this list.

My main reasons for looking forward to it will be on the pitch; we have such depth in the squad now that promising youngsters will struggle to get game time in the league, and we have a few players on the fringes (like Edwards and Harper) who I think have bags of potential.

Off the pitch, I can't believe we have fans who would turn their noses up at a trip to Wembley because of the status of the competition, but, as you mentioned, a whole generation of fans haven't had the chance to watch Ipswich play at Wembley; an opportunity to do that would be a great experience for them.

The 2000 Play-Off Final is the clear highlight of my time following Town...imagine if we got to play Barnsley in the EFLT final - would be a fantastic day out for both sets of fans 22 years on...

The fact that there's Prem U21 teams in it makes it a farce as far as I'm concerned. Embarrassed that we're part of it.

It would be peak Ipswich to draw Crawley in the Semi and lose while they go on to play Accrington in the final while Blackburn and Colchester reach the play off final leaving us alone on the list.

I feel we say things like this every year. This season we’ve already lost to Col U at home with our cup team.

After years of nothingness in cups there is nothing to suggest this year will be different. Couldn’t care less about them and just want to get out of this god forsaken league.

Precisely my thoughts.

Although I'd still be embarrassed that we'd sunk so to low take part in it (let alone having to go through it four times!), I could accept it as a genuine competition if weren't for the u-21s being a part of it, which makes it utterly farcical.
