Calling all vegan nutcases 20:55 - Dec 12 with 2743 viewsfooters

One of your kind has been teleported to my Christmas table. Alert! This is not situation normal!

How can I treat them and not give them some generic nut roast crap? Any ideas, recipes?

Almost all of my meal involves meat/dairy in some way so it's difficult to substitute. Although if there is a certain type of vegan 'cream' then I would be pleased to know.

More interesting than the footy, innit

There's various cream alternatives that you can get in the supermarket. The Alpro stuff is decent enough. You could do a vegan Wellington for their main, shop bought puff pastry is vegan and then you can just fill it with some mushrooms and chestnuts and shizzle like that. Or see if you can source a Tofurkey roast if that sounds like too much of a ball ache.

I am doing the Criss Cross

Even the meat eaters can enjoy a slice.

Do a decent Veg Gravy and then all the other trimmings.

That may be perfect as I'm making beef wellington for the proper main. If I did a mini vegan one and subbed the cream for that vegan stuff for the mash then I reckon it's a goer.

Will add peterlee's gravy too, with a drop of red wine... unless there is something non-vegan about red wine?

Not all wine is vegan as some use animal based finings to clear it. Get one that says its suitable for vegans to be on the safe side, a lot of supermarket wine will be fine.

Cheers Herbs, much appreciated. The bloke's arms are thicker than my legs so don't want to upset him, especially at Crimbo...

I think being beaten up over a sub-par mushroom and chestnut wellington may be a new low.

It could well happen.

The vegan cream is a doer - I made a rather nice cream cheesecake which was vegan friendly,

I believe it was Oatly but that seems to have different ethical concerns.

I'm almost jealous if I'm honest.

I'm cooking Christmas dinner despite finishing wouk at 7AM Christmas morning, and the brother in law and his missus plus little one are over.

My other half is vegetarian, his other half is gluten intolerant, pick the bones out of that.

Last time I did it we had lasagne made with quorn and gluten free pasta, still mulling this year over. Anybody has any suggestions I'm all ears, but please bear in mind I have limited preparation time and will have not slept in about 24 hours.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Serve them a normal Christmas dinner and tell them they can't leave the table until they've finished it all.

I'm no Scrooge, factorz. Christmas comes but once a year and I am like a kid again every time. I will do my best to provide the tastiest vegan food I can for this young man while he is sitting at my table.

And it means there will be more meat and cheese for me, so he is welcome to whatever slop I can put together when half cut.

Also bumping as I need advice on any vegan cheese which is suitably melty... There are so many types and I'm all at sea!

I had to cook for 2 veggies the other day. I was unsure about potatoes (in animal fat? cooking fat?) so asked them. They kindly brought their own frozen ones.

Point being - you could ask them? They may get you out of a hole :-)

It's a good point, laggers. But my stupidity and culinary pride will mean marching on until disaster hits! Think I've worked it all out now mainly (well, aside from cheese that's proper melty) and if he don't like it then I'll kick him out in the cold.

Sort of knew that. But can you as a veggie accept spuds in cooking fat and spuds in animal fat on the same baking tray?

I wouldn't, no. Very good chance some of the animal fat will end up on the other spuds.
