Brexit is the political equivalent of free beer and Improved Performances. With no hope of a rescue package from the yanks.

Or rather, just the promise of free beer and improved performances despite people telling you the pumps are dry and no signs of better football.

You do realise this driver shortage has got very little to do with BREXIT don’t you? This has been coming down road for years! The amount of young ones who want to put up with the working conditions hardly exist. As for the fuel ‘crisis’ I have it from a mate who actually drives tankers that the problem is not driver shortage as they can cope albeit with longer hours it’s the muppets draining the stations dry because they ‘might’’ run out not because they actually need it!

It's got a whole host of causes, but being in the EU was the one thing that was allowing us to paper over the cracks and keep goods in the stores. That's why the government have belatedly offered emergency visas to overseas drivers. We could probably cope with this outside of the EU, but only if a long term plan had been put in place to increase the number of domestic drivers. It wasn't of course, because that would have involved acknowledging the problem in the first place rather than lying to the public about how wonderful everything would be if only they believed hard enough.

It has very much to do with Brexit. Prior to Brexit there were lots of keen and hardworking people who bridged gaps in our labour market. These people have mostly now returned home, leaving hundreds of thousands of open positions with no potential applicants. As we generally have pretty low unemployment and generally the younger workforce are highly educated and ambitious. The fuel shortage is being absolutely exaggerated by the purchasing patterns of complete morons, correct but the underlying shortage of drivers (that is modest) was triggered by a labour shortage that the Government have done nothing to address, despite it being pointed out by everyone, all the time. That labour shortage is exaggerated by Brexit. So it's just totally untrue to say it has nothing to do with Brexit. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-09-09/u-k-worker-shortage-sparks-ra [Post edited 2 Oct 2021 10:51]

Didn’t really say it has nothing to with Brexit! Although the few thousand drivers who have gone home obviously does not helpThe haulage company’s knew this was coming years ago as did the distribution industry and what did they do about it? Sod all! You can’t tell me that 100000 or so drivers left these shores all a the same time. I myself am over the retirement age and as soon as the little lady gets her pension next year there will be another vacancy to be filled.
