Never saw much of him as a player, but what a manager. What he achieved as ROI manager was amazing. Played to the players available strengths. If only other managers did that. He played a system and style that suited them and didn't give much thought about the opposition. If only other managers did that. The game is simple when you use those tactics and systems. Play to Your strengths. R.I.P Big Jack. You were a hell of a man.

That shock victory over Italy will live long in the memory. Jack Charlton memorably went head on with FIFA regarding players not being allowed a drinks break during hot conditions. Plus him and Aldridge having a heated disagreement with a FIFA jobsworth on the touchline.
One of those world cup games that sticks in the memory for me.

He was ahead of his time in getting his players to do a high press. They hunted in packs and made life hell for the opposition in their own half. Which, I guess, Liverpool and Man City and others do today. In possession, he wanted it delivered directly. That wasn’t playing to the strengths of O’Leary, Brady, Whelan, Aldridge but he believed in his game plan and got all his players to do so as well.
His man management and charisma made a united and talented bunch very hard to beat. I was listening to Mick Byrne this morning who was involved in the Ireland set up with big Jack and that was what he identified. Jack’s man management skills, how he treated his players like adults and how they all bought into it.
Jack’s contribution to Irish culture transcends football. We dared to dream.

Also twitter has as you'd expect been an absolute goldmine today
Thanks for that. I’ll have a look at that.
He was adored by many here.
I did idly muse today on how things might have been if England went for big Jack instead of Bobby in 82. Jack became our manager in 86. Jack was managing the Owls when Bobby left Town.
A legend. He was also the co-commentator for ITV's coverage of the 1978 FA Cup final.
A friend of mine was driving through Northern Ireland on his was to holiday in Donegal a few weeks after the 1990 World Cup and stopped in Enniskillen to get petrol. Who was also there filling up but Jack. He spent half an hour chatting to all and sundry and signing autographs. He was a one off and a proper personality.

Refs from his era also quite liked Big Jack. Apparently, he would often disagree with a decision, but he would give them a short, sharp blast and then get on with the game. It was the players who were always on at them who were annoying.
