Sublime and ridiculous goals got the win 22:41 - Nov 16 with 3520 views | Mullet | But that was not a very good game of football. All in all it probably worked out, there were some rum tackles flying in and Burns copped one in the back of the calf that looked bad. Piggot had a tug in the box but came up short with his penalty appeals. Apart from that we threatened to as much damage to ourselves as them at times. Walton and Aluko had very good games. The keeper made more than one good stop, and the two centre backs swept up a lot when our opulent passing seemed to hem us in a bit and hoofs didn’t always make it. Likewise we’d pass to the shadow of a runner and get turned over in important areas too often. I really like Harper but he stunk as neither a 10 or an 8 tonight. Having Fraser and El Miz as the two just didn’t work beyond the individual talent of all three. Piggott was isolated far too often and it was only him going out wide to get on the ball they we forced they first goal. We had some really good individuals out there but were a tad lucky to go in at half time level. The ref was a tad inconsistent but we definitely stepped it up a gear in the second half. Whatever Cook or Reid said at half time had an impact. Runs were better and ambitious balls weren’t so wasteful. The subs seemed about getting minutes in legs and if we got a result so be it. Seeing Jackson on wax very odd. Likewise, to take Woolf off over the fridge was a bold call. The winner was lovely though. We all shouted “shoot” as us customary and he seemed to get enough lift and slice to totally bamboozle the keeper and put it across his body into the inside of the post. It was the best thing Idris has done all night and a goal to saviour. I really felt for Latics fans leaving the ground. They really are suffering and Boundary Park is a decent stadium for this level, let alone the league below and likely non league soon. Hopefully getting the result and a few players polished up into the way Cook wants them to play us the big win tonight. We’ve got a lot of important games to win this next few weeks and will need all the players pulling in the right direction and taking their chances.

Blimey, so 90% went for play offs as a minimum and 80% went for play off final as a minimum. Seems it's more than just a handful of fans that were expecting a serious promotion charge this season. I do kind of get it, we've been terrible these past few years so the prospect of things getting better leads to people feeling positive. Couple that with the most vociferous supporters of the current regime being those who were adamant Mick was the nadir and things could only improve after he left and you can see why some are very invested in Cook and Gamechanger emotionally. That we've been pretty meh this season has to be accommodated within a wider view that everything is great and one way to do that is to downplay expectations and pretend that promotion never was the main aim this season. That way it doesn't feel like a disappointment and the overall positivity can be retained. I get it, it's just not much fun when one upshot is that the odd dose of realism gets treated as heresy. Sublime and ridiculous goals got the win on 08:42 - Nov 17 by Chrisd | It might not have been a great performance, but the bottomline is we found a way to get over the line and win the game. Imagine the moaning if we had lost? Personally, I’m pleased we are still involved in the FA Cup instead of treating it with contempt which we have in the past. Take the win and let’s get back to league action on Saturday and a huge game at Sunderland. I’d take another scrappy win up there too! |
I'm not sure how you can say that about contempt at all. It was very much a side designed to get legs fit for the league games ahead and protect others. Had we lost last night, course there'd be moaning, but I doubt Cook would be bothered an iota either about a home tie with Barrow.

Well yes, these "principles" are fairly plastic and elusive aren't they from certain elites on here. It does baffle me that drawing with Rotherham would now be a good result or being a whole league below what used to be unacceptable is better. But then I'm old fashioned and a stickler for reality etc.

The contempt was from previous seasons, not last night. I disagree, when you look at his starting XI from the first tie, he was very much taking it seriously. That’s not something many of our managers have done for quite some time. [Post edited 17 Nov 2021 17:42]

How was last night different times previous seasons? I understand your point, I just don’t see any truth to it.

Last night wasn’t the first tie though. So if anything hasnt he shown it more contempt by that logic? [Post edited 17 Nov 2021 17:47]

The attitude of previous managers was to get out of the competition asap as it was a distraction that is a fair assessment. I love the game when we play ‘selective memory’ and pretend things didn’t happen.

Not at all, that side last night was more than good enough to get the result which it did ultimately.

That sort of continues to agree with me and argue against yourself. If that’s the prior attitude what was last night?

Did you not think that side was good enough to win last night when it was announced? Of course it was. Contempt on Cook’s part would be playing a lot of inexperienced players last night. There was none of that, in fact there was plenty of experience and quality on the field for us to get the job done.

Burns at RB, alongside Clements, El Mizouni, Harper and including bomb squad players like Jackson, Kenlock and even Woolf in an XI that was about as random as can be isn’t showing contempt for the competition by your logic how exactly? When did previous managers fail to win with their first choice side then do this? None of what your saying seems different, but inconvenient.

We were rarely in that position when previous managers had that option as we’d lost the first tie and therefore out of the competition. [Post edited 18 Nov 2021 7:17]

I do think it's a bit revisionist - our results and performances in FA Cup have been rubbish for years - no doubt and it's incredibly frustrating. But bar Man U away, and Palace away, in the League Cup when I've seen a much changed team I've always felt it looked good enough to win the game. Obviously the home tie an outlier here, because that was a strong side picked, but Tuesday's slection wasn't very different to those made under Lambert or even McCarthy where it was 7-8 changes, looking good enough on paper and then putting in a pretty weak performance. Just this time we were the right side of the result. I don't follow other teams closely enough, but our much changed teams always seem to struggle regardless on who is the manager - even this year we've lost to Newport, West Ham U21s and drawn with Oldham and Colchester with teams that looked strong.
