...and it will certainly be in the Parliamentary careers, let alone the lifetimes, of some of our current politicians, when they will be held accountable in very fundamental and meaningful ways for their continuous and repeated failure to act even remotely effectively on carbon emissions.
They will be held accountable for at best pissing around whilst much of life on earth was doomed by their inaction, or at worst being complicit in corrupt and harmful practices for personal profit or short-term selfish goals.
Whether that accountability comes in conventional law courts (unlikely perhaps), or in the court of public opinion in a increasingly anarchical world without the law and order that they probably assume is going to protect them in their elite status, come I am sure it will.
When only 10% of politicians of all parties attend a crucially important briefly by the well-respected Chief Scientific Advisor, whilst the anguished pleas of the UN Secretary-General are ignored, and while articles like...
...are effectively ignored by governments the world over, and our own governing party holds a leadership election where environmental issues are barely mentioned, the charge of 'Crimes Against Humanity' are really only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what these jokers are responsible for.
Sorry, rant over, but it's breaking my heart more than ever at the moment.
Because people are selfish and this is reflected in our politics and our representatives as you say.
Short-termism has been the order of the day, especially with the Tories, for a long time now.
Everything is about the here and now with no real long-term planning.
No one who can make a difference cares. Those who stand up and speak up are roundly mocked by the ignorant who always creep and crawl around the wrong people like cowards, because it's easier to laugh at someone like a young girl who wants to change the world than it is to stand up for what is right.
Those speaking out, those taking action; they shame those who want to spend their short time on the earth for their own gains and trivial pleasures.
Now you can say that I've grown bitter but of this you may be sure The rich have got their channels in the bedrooms of the poor And there's a mighty judgement coming .......... but I may be wrong

And they're not going to stand for that.
A lot of it comes down to individualism versus society. The essential basis of human civilisation is co-operation and working for the good of the group.
That was abused by the nationalists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, then by the ideologies of the succeeding 50 years. A lot of people died.
There was a reaction, obedience became a dirty word. People began to look to their own interest. That moved into the economic sphere with Reagan and Thatcher. The pendulum swung hard the other way, libertarianism rose and greed became good.
Now the damage from that has been seen and a rebalancing is beginning to come in. But it will not be swift or easy. Or necessarily comfortable - we have seen how some of it is being diverted into a new nationalism. A problem with reaction is that people run hard the other way. The extreme and the revolutionary seems attractive, however flawed their proponents. A bit of rational moderation is needed.
